BIBLE STUDY AIDS PRAYER

Effective prayer is like a case argued successfully in court. An advocate can only get the reliefs he is seeking for his client if his submissions are anchored on the law. He, therefore, needs to know the provisions of the law and previous decisions in similar cases, otherwise known as legal precedents.

The same is true when we approach our judge, the Almighty God. We need to know His word, e.g. the promises in it, so we can remind Him of them when we pray because God is bound by His word (Psalm 138: verse 2b). We also need to remind God of what He did in related situations in the past. That is why sick believers remind God of the healing of the woman with a haemorrhage, blind Bartimaeus and others. The Holy Spirit will actually prompt us as to the relevant scriptures for each situation. We don’t necessarily have to quote verbatim chapter and verse, we just need to express their essence.

This is the secret to effective prayer. It is not mere pleading with God or with the devil. The court of heaven is open 24 hours and our presiding officer is waiting to adjudicate fairly for us ACCORDING TO HIS WORD.

The prevailing practice among serious believers is to read the Bible through once every year. Going through three chapters a day will get you there. Many devotional guides provide plans that specify the portions to read daily to accomplish this or you can just read sequentially from Genesis to Revelation. Using Bible handbooks, study Bibles and different versions also improve your understanding of the word.

May the Lord answer you speedily today as you pray with His word in Jesus’ name.
