We all need the heart of a child if we are to enjoy life fully, live in harmony with others and generally please God. That is why the Lord Jesus used them as examples during His earthly ministry. Hear Him:
“Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.” – Matthew 18:3
“Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” – Matthew 19:14
“Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.” – Mark 10:15
He was saying in contemporary English that the kingdom of heaven belongs to those who have the characteristics of little children: those who are childlike in the sense that this poem shows: those who are innocent and don’t carry unnecessary baggage; those who trust God fully and are open to others.
I don’t know about you, but that’s the kind of person I want to be. So I continuously pray the prayer in this poem so that my satiation in certain respects, my maturity and independence, do not rob me of my sense of wonder or deprive me of the best that God has for me here and keep me from His kingdom at last.
GIVE ME, OH LORD, THE HEART OF A CHILD IN JESUS’ NAME. AMEN.
All the scriptures used in this piece are from the King James Version of the Holy Bible.
