IS TITHING COMPULSORY FOR THE CHRISTIAN? (What Really Does the Bible Say?)

INTRO:
Someone may feel that this topic is wrong, that the question should be, “Should Christians pay tithes?” But I crave your indulgence to read on and you will see why I have used this title.

What is tithing, to begin with? It is the payment of a tenth of one’s earnings to God through the church or one’s minister. This is one of the most contentious issues in Christianity today. Some preachers say that tithing is mandatory for Christians and that those who don’t pay will be open to attacks from the devil, without God’s defence. In fact, it was recently reported that a General Overseer of a large pentecostal church with headquarters in Nigeria declared that members who don’t pay tithes will not go to heaven.

On the other hand, some Christians accuse pastors who insist their members must tithe on defrauding them. The arguments are usually that the pastors end up living far more comfortably than their members.

In the light of the foregoing, what does the Bible actually teach about tithing? And what should a Christian’s stand on it be? While I am confident that, by God’s grace, I have captured the proper position on this issue in this post, I need to emphasise the need to search the Scriptures yourself and have a daily habit of feeding on the Word to build your faith and clarify any issues your attention is drawn to.

MAJOR BIBLICAL REFERENCES TO TITHING

The first Biblical reference to tithing is in the story of Abraham’s defeat of King Cherdorlaomer and his allies, who had invaded Sodom and carried off his nephew, Lot, and many others.

“And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.” – Genesis 14:20

When Abraham returned from the battle, Melchidezek King of Salem, who was also a priest, met him and thanked God for his defeat of his enemies. And Abraham paid tithes of his bounties to him.

Note that we are not told that Abraham paid tithes consistently and, technically speaking, this wasn’t a regular tithe because Abraham was paying from the stuff recovered from the invaders, none of which was his. It basically means he gave a tenth of what was recovered to thank God for granting he and his associates victory.

The next point was when Jacob was running to his mother’s family for shelter from his brother Esau’s rage.

“20. And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, 21. So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the Lord be my God: 22. And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.” – Genesis 28:20-22

Jacob made a pledge to God in prayer because he sought his protection. Once again, we are not told he made this a regular practice.

Then when God gave the law through Moses, the tithe was formally instituted to sustain the priests and Levites (who would serve in the temple) and take care of the frequent sacrifices they were to make on behalf of the people. Tithes were classified and some were for the care of the needy: widows, orphans and strangers. In fact, even those paying the tithe were to eat out of it sometimes.

“And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s: it is holy unto the Lord.” – Leviticus 27:30

“But the tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer as an heave offering unto the Lord, I have given to the Levites to inherit: therefore I have said unto them, Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.” – Numbers 18:24

“22. Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year. 23. And thou shalt eat before the Lord thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the Lord thy God always.” – Deuteronomy 14:22-23

“28. At the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay it up within thy gates: 29. And the Levite, (because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest.” – Deuteronomy 14:28-29

During the reign of the kings of Israel and after the exile of the Jews, there were occasions when the people, after periods of neglect, were rallied to contribute their tithes in order to revive temple services and get the Levites back to their duty posts therein (2 Chronicles 31:4-6; Nehemiah 13:10-12).

Another important reference to tithing in the Bible was where the Israelites were rebuked for not tithing in the book of Malachi.

“8. Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. 9. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. 10. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. 11. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts.” – Malachi 3:8-11

This passage is frequently quoted in churches to imply that if a Christian does not tithe, he or she would be bereft of God’s protection. But is this really what the Bible teaches? The passage above was clearly referring to the Jews to whom the law had been given.

In the gospels, we hear about tithing where the Lord Jesus was rebuking the religious leaders for their conscientiousness in tithing while neglecting more important issues in the law.

“23. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.” – Matthew 23:23

It also featured in the Parable of the Pharisee and the Publican, where the Pharisee was boasting about giving tithes on all he owned (Luke 18:12). This goes to show, as we have seen so far, that tithing was an obligation among the Jews. But is it the same for Christians?

[bctt tweet=”Tithing was an obligation among the Jews. But is it the same for Christians?” username=”edithsmusings”]

TITHING IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

The church of Jesus Christ came into being after his ascension to heaven when his disciples began to preach the gospel far and wide. Our Lord Jesus had concentrated his ministry among the Jews. Remember his reply to the Syro-Phoenician woman who came begging for healing for her daughter and his instruction to his disciples when he sent them out to preach:

“But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” – Matthew 15:24

“5. These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: 6. But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7. And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.” – Matthew 10:5-7

Although our Lord’s teachings in the gospels are universal in some respects, the doctrine for the New Testament church is clearly delineated in Acts of the Apostles and the epistles where the apostles clarified what is applicable to Christians from the law. (One example is the submission of the Council of Jerusalem in Acts 15.) In none of those scriptures are Christians commanded to give tithes. Giving in the New Testament is voluntary and as God has blessed you.

“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” – 2 Corinthians 9:7

[bctt tweet=”All giving in the New Testament is voluntary and as God has blessed you.” username=”edithsmusings”]

The kind of equivalence some preachers apply in relating Old Testament (OT) Scriptures to the present dispensation cannot always be justified. We are under grace, not under law.

“16. And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. 17. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.” – John 1:16-17

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God” – Ephesians 2:8.

But you might say Jesus came to fulfill the law. Yes, he did. That’s precisely why we have been relieved of most of the observances: the sacrifices, the fees, the New Moons and yearly festivals, etc.

“23. But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. 24. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.” – Galatians 3:23-25

Does this mean we are not to obey God’s laws or that we can make up our own rules?

We need to understand that the law had different aspects. There is the moral law which comprises universal and eternal precepts of right and wrong which we see reflected in the entire Scriptures. Take for instance, the Ten Commandments. The principles they embody were already in force before Moses received the Decalogue inscribed on stone. Those are still binding on us. For example, the sixth commandment says, “Thou shalt not kill” and you see from the beginning where God held Cain accountable for the killing of his brother, Abel. That was long before the time of Moses and we are still expected to obey that.

[bctt tweet=”Christians are subject to the moral, but not the ceremonial, aspects of OT law.” username=”edithsmusings”]

The moral law is what is referred to in Romans chapter 1.

“14. … the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: 15. Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another” – Romans 2:14-15.

But the law had ceremonial aspects that pertained to ritual cleanness and temple observances which the death of Christ has brought to an end. For example, the constant sacrifices for sin are no longer required since Christ’s blood has been shed for us (Hebrews 10:1-18).

The law also had civil/judicial aspects which may not be reflected in the laws of our countries now. For example, procedures for settlement of disputes, redemption of property, giving of loans, stuff like that. Those were for the Israelites at that time and don’t pertain to us.

[bctt tweet=”The civil/judicial aspects of OT law applied to the then theocratic state of Israel.” username=”edithsmusings”]

Some people insist that tithing falls under the moral law because it has to do with honouring God with our substance but the fact is that under the New Testament, there is no obligatory way stipulated for honouring God with our substance.

As Christians who love God, we cannot fail to give: to support the work of God in churches, missionary organisations, charities, etc. We also need to give to support ministers of the gospel, needy people around us and elsewhere. But how and what we give should be worked out between us and God. The Christian has the peculiar advantage of having the indwelling Holy Spirit. Old Testament believers lacked that. We can decide by His leading to tithe, give various kinds of offerings and pledges but it should always be done without fear and without compulsion.

“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, other forso let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” – 2 Corinthians 9:7

[bctt tweet=”Every form of giving by a Christian should be done without fear or compulsion.” username=”edithsmusings”]

Personally, I think that tithing as a form of giving is good because it is a substantial way to support churches and ministries. It helps to equip them to reach the lost and strengthen the saved. There is something to be said for the regularity of it too when one makes a commitment to tithe. It could help one to develop a habit or consistency in giving which they may lack the discipline to maintain otherwise. And if you feel it’s a way to covenant God to oversee and bless your ways … well, Jacob did it too as we saw earlier. But I cannot find any scriptural support to say that it is absolutely demanded of Christians or that its non-payment will cost one admission into heaven.

CONCLUSION:
Each of us need to know God personally and have an interactive relationship with Him. As I said in the Introduction, we must also prayerfully read the Bible for ourselves and peruse it with relevant study aids. I recommend reading your Bible through yearly and comparing translations to fully understand the passages that you examine. It will help you to see for yourself what the Bible says about different issues, tithing included.

There is no doubt that there are blessings accruable from tithing as many tithing Christians will testify. These blessings are receivable from other forms of giving as well but the magnitude of the tithe (being 10% of one’s earnings) does come into play because the word of God promises that, “He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully” – 2 Corinthians 9:6. So a tithing Christian is blessed because God is faithful to reward his or her generous sowing into His work, not because tithing is compulsory and God is bound to forsake or curse non-tithing Christians.

In effect, the teaching that distinguishes tithing from other forms of giving, that says tithing is mandatory while the others are optional, cannot be supported by Scripture because tithing is not even commanded for Christians. While it is possible for a Christian to receive a rhema (direct word of God) to pay tithes due to his or her peculiar situation, that does not make it a universally applicable doctrine for Christians.

I look forward to hearing your views on this. Do share the post widely if you’ve found it helpful. God bless you richly in Jesus’ name.

What is your view on the controversy surrounding tithing?

Are there issues that God has spoken to you about that might be peculiar to you? E.g. going for morning cry at stipulated times or not wearing jewelry.

What other teachings in the contemporary church do you see as not properly supported by Scripture?

  • The controversy surrounding tithing like you pointed out is a contentious topic indeed. All I pray for is enough blessings and the grace to share them. God bless you for this food for thought.??

  • I really appreciate your effort in addressing this issue. This issue has become a reason for people to relent and be shaken in the faith. Thank you for illustrating this and backing it up with the scriptures let those that have ears listen. Thanks ma for being a vessel in the hands of the Lord for inspiring us and building us In the faith.

  • Egbo Rita Somtochukwu

It is indeed inspirational. This post has really thought me alot that giving can also be a means of tithing and it is not want you must do but what you feel is right as a child of God.

    • Edith Ohaja

That’s right. Have a great week, Rita, in Jesus’ name.

      • Koko

I just want to understand something is giving to the needy also tithing or we must take the tithes to church direct .. because I really don’t know again

  • Ezeorah Cynthia Somtochukwu

I believe pastors who make tithing compulsory are those who built their churches for monetary rewards. Since they teach so much about hell, I bet they know the consequences of what they are doing. The problem is those they are leading astray, pray God opens their eyes.

    • Edith Ohaja

I don’t believe all are doing it for money. This is probably what they were taught growing up and even in Bible school and they haven’t investigated it further. There’s also the climate of fear attached to the issue, so they might feel they are doing their flock a favour to spare them from God’s wrath. You are blessed!

I have been waiting for a day like this, however in my own perspective i think Tithing is a way of sowing a seed, a way of showing appreciation to God through a priest or a pastor but i guess tithing was never a compulsory issue in the bible because u give according to what u recieved but what if u dont recieve what happens are you condemed? No!! Meanwhile there are other forms of giving whereby u can sow a seed in the life of ur neighbour, a stranger, a brother, it must not be through a man of God or priests because sometimes they do use those tithes for their upkeep instead of God’s work so i think as a christian i give according to what i recieve nd i sow a seed with faith not just because i want to but because i feel it’s the right way to say thank you jesus.

  • Obidigbo Ifunanya Nino

Tithe is between you and God, pastors shouldn’t make it compulsory it doesn’t even determine you making heaven, they should lay more emphasis on the things of God and not only talking about money. I recommend this write up to all pastors who make tithe compulsory. Thank you ma for the eye opening write up.

  • Orji blessing chidubem

In Christianity the concept is everything belongs to God. What you have you have because of him. As an act of discipline, obedience and growth Christians give back a portion. In addition, if you are in a church it, does cost money to keep it going. All the little things you face, heat, light, phone, etc. they also face. If you are benefiting from the church does it not make sense you should help them as well?

Certain denominations do get fussy about the tithe and say it must be a minimum of 10%. They would also levy it on your gross pay, not your net. Other denominations do not have a rigid rule and leave it to the individual.

Is it a sin not to give the 10%? Depends on why you are not giving. Do you need the money to eat, to care for your family or do you want a new CD, see a movie, get the latest clothes? The question might better be: How much (and why) am I keeping for myself?

“For Moses said, ‘HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER’; and, ‘HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER, IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH’; but you say, ‘If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),’ you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother; thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”

Mark 7:10-12 (New American Standard Bible)

    • Edith Ohaja

The point is: Tithing is not commanded for Christians. Deciding to do it is therefore a choice, not an obligation. God’s grace in all you do in Jesus’ name.

  • Anyalewechi Chinaza Victory

Tithing is not necessarily given to a minister or priest, since it is giving to God, Sharing one tenth of our earnings to the less privileged out there is another way of paying our tithe. We should remember this fact that Christ said that “anything we do to one of the least of my brethren, that you do unto me”.

  • Anazodo Helen

Am not saying it’s bad but i prefer giving out to people that need help than giving out to the church. Tithe is not a compulsory something but christian’s are made to believe that way, that they must give half to God what he gave them.

  • Udeobasi Ngozi B.

The bible is a like a two-edged sword. it contains contrasting issues and if one does not have the gift of understanding which is given by the holy spirit, one will end up decoding the wrong message from the bible.
Personally, paying tithes is a good thing to do but it should not be our priority as christians. our priority should be our salvation and doing the will of God who created us.
the logic is this, whatever a man sows, that he shall reap; if you concentrate on paying the tithe and neglet your salvation, God will surely reward you here on earth by multiplying your wealth because he said that givers never lack and that the measure you give will be the measure you will receive. but that does not guarantee your salvation as you may get all the wealth you need from God and still end up in hell fire. but when you make salvation your priority and forget to help the needy or giving back to God in thanksgiving for what he has given to you or done for you, you will secure your salvation which is to make heaven but you will not get the reward for alms giving.
In all, we should always remember to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and every other things shall be added unto us. that is to say, “the kingdom of God should be our priority on earth”

  • Tithing is not mandatory. Let no one deceive you. Tithing is a thing of the heart done out of your own free will. It’s not bad if you give to the preachers but don’t be forced.

  • Okechukwu Timothy
Thank you ma for this. Reading your posts have made me see things from another perspective. Now I have another perception about this issue. We perish because we do not know.

  • Amana Sharon Umola

God bless you ma for addressing this issue. The body of Christ is filled with so many controversies that need to be addressed. You are a blessing ma.

  • Precious Gold

Many preachers still think of tithing as a commandment, regardless of the numerous debate over it. But, I prefer how you put it; tithing should be an act of will and not of compulsion or fear. Tithing is good. Because, even in the new testament, we are advised to seek the kingdom first and that means even in our finances, we should put God first. That, invariably, means giving all and not even a tenth. I think all those who argue whether to give or not give tithe are not looking into the scriptures hard enough.

  • EDEH CYNTHIA OLUOMACHI

In my own view, tithing is a blessing to our lives and something that will help better our lives (as well as help the lives of others). We are not saved by works, thus failing to tithe will not necessarily send us to hell, but doing so will help improve our lives and strengthen our relationship with God. I personally don’t believe that God will curse us if we don’t pay our tithe, but I do believe He will help us escape the curse that is already in the world if we do. God bless u ma..i really learnt from this…..

  • Ujevwe Emmanuel

I don’t see tithe as a compulsory thing but due to the lessons people have grown up listening to, it has now become the most basic thing. Some would have this believe that as far as they pay their tithe, Salvation is sure.

  • Henry

This issue has generated lots of controversy in the body of Christ. As you have rightly pointed out that Tithe is not mandatory, however, it should be of note that Christians should pay their tithe. Tithe is simply telling God, you recognize HIM been the source of your income. As Christians, we should look beyond our Pastors who collect these tithes but God who we give it to. For me, i see giving the one tenth as sacrifice to God, acknowledging its all from him not because a man in robe sweet talks me.

  • stella

tithing is one practice that assures blessings in multiple folds….endeavorur give back to God in your own little way

  • helen

tithing had ever been a controversial issue. when one pays his/her tithe, it should be remembered that, the offering is being given to God and not man

tithing has really beneficial outcomes……we should give back to God

Am personally excited on this topic that u addressed b/c it has cleared me from the confusions tithing has on my head.Whenever I did not meet up to pay my tithe in a particular month I will always be unsettled but with this piece I now know that am not under compulsion to pay tithe but that it is a necessity.Thank u ma and remain blessed

  • Sunday Ezekwesiri Daniel

Tithing is a controversial issue in christiandom. Though it is not a commandment but that does not mean it’s not necessary. Tithes and offerings is not mandatory but it is necessary for every believer.
we must remember that His word says we should not appear before Him empty. One thing I believe in tithing is that it’s not done as a result of force but out of willingness and through a cheerful heart. And that is when it will yield fruit. God bless you ma.

  • Oleighibe Oluebube Tessy

    Tithing
The truth is that, most pastors tend to make tithing a compulsory thing in the church….
Some go as far as to making it a threat, some would say “if you don’t give back to God, He will no longer bless you”.
As a matter of fact, some pastors have turn the church into a business place by making tithing a compulsory thing, that even those who don’t have feel so bad and guilty.
Well, to me, tithing shouldn’t be a compulsory thing and I believe that sometimes, tithe should be given straight to the needy (e.g motherless babies home).

  • Isaac Nwanneka Oyiridiya

I can say that tithing is necessary but not mandatory. You are meant to do it with your whole heart not out of compulsion. You should not steal just because you want to pay tithe i doubt If God will even accept it.Thank you Ma for this piece

  • Ajibo Chioma B

Tithing is not compulsory but necessary, God does not enforce payment of tithe but as Christians we should give back to God as a sign of respect and love for God.

  • Iroegbu Chinatu Amar

Tithing isn’t something that should be enforced on people. people should be allowed to choose between paying tithes or not. God knows people’s heart.

  • Nnamani Oluoma Esther

Tithing is important to build our giving attitude. If we have the habit of giving to God who we do not see, it would be very easy to give to our fellow humans who are in need. However, tithing shouldn’t be forced on anyone.

  • Afiadigwe Nnedinso Rita

Am always inspired after reading your work ma. Paying tith is not compulsory but as Christians it is our duty to appreciate the goodness of the lord in our lives. Givers never lack. Well done ma.

  • Adonu Ifeanyichukwu B

Thanks for enlightening us on this controversial issue. Many pastors in Nigeria use tithing to blackmail their followers in order to live ostentatiously. There was a report sometime this year that some Nigeria pastors use POS in their church to encourage tithing. This shows the degree of significance placed on tithing. Blackmailing your followers psychologically to pay tithe is unchristian. I think pastors should read the history of tithing in the Bible to have more insight on it. God loves a cheerful giver and most Christians pay tithe grudgingly because of the religious connotations attached to it.

  • Alexis Okoye

The contradictions surrounding tithes and its impact in churches is diverse and controversial, as to who does the money really go to in terms of appreciating what God has done in one’s life.On the other hand, i think it appeals to those that are earning a living.Nevertheless, when tithes is basically on 10 percent of ones earnings, some people pay a token as regards tithes and in churches, i have observed that people give more emphasis on offering than tithes and may not be able to differentiate between tithes and offering.I don’t really know why it is so.
All the same, i really enjoy your blog, the stories and messages are so interesting .

  • Ani Fabian

This controversy have really affected the way people see the church and God’s representative as well. If we claim we love God as Christians we should definitely know how to give as well.It was never recorded in bible the that paying of tithe was compulsory.we pay our tithe and offering in other to assist in the growth of the church.thank u very much ma for these post.these post will definitely add positive impact on those that don’t believe.

  • Onwusonye promise

I buy into your idea just as you do to the word of God. I think God saw tithing when he said that he who believes and confesses with his mouth shall be saved. Tithing is not more important than love. I believe love without tithing also makes for heaven. Tithing is very good, but a personal decision which should never be imposed on all. Bless you for this ma.

    • Sunday Kingsley Odinakachukwu.

Thank you ma for addressing this issue. It has been a major controversy in our contemporary world. The bible made us to know that tithing is not compulsory. But as children of God, we give God little from the abundance He has given us.

  • Joshua igwe

Thank you ma for pulling me out of confusion as this controversy of tithe paying has really left me one sided i think better explanation and reading of the scriptures lies all the answers we need.

  • Maduabuchi Emmanuel Chidera

Ever since this controversy began about tithing, I decided to stay mute until a justifiable reason is given on it, yes I believe in tithing and this post has clarified some doubt that came to my mind. In the OT, they lived by the law but in the NT, we live by grace and the direction of the Holy Spirit, in my own opinion, I think we need to search the scriptures more deeply and pray for proper understanding of the word and its appication. I see tithing as sowing into God’s vineyard in order to reap bountifully from him, but these days, most preachers emphasize more on giving instead of winning more souls for the Kingdom which I think is not correct. If you have give, if you don’t, God understands but mindset matters. That’s for the enlightenment Ma.

  • Bessong faith Ada

So comprehensive, wonderful with captivating citations. If I may add, the idea of tithing has lost its perspicacity in African Christendom. We gullible Africans have chosen to be religious fanatics cum lunatics instead of building on our moral values, for instance, a case where a man earns barely what can feed his family (wife and children), yet he talks about tithing, will God really affirm such a foolishness…. my perception here is that tithing should go to those who can afford such monthly charity.

  • Ugwuaneke Grace U.

This has cleared my doubt because many Christians today and even preachers themselves doesn’t know the clear truth concerning this fact, tithing is optional and not mandatory not like when a poor man out their would be compelled to pay a tithe while he has not seen enough to eat.I urge sometimes that the reverse should be the case, let the men of God give one tenth of what they have also so that the church will keep going.

  • Dike Gerald Osinachi

It is true that tithing is a good act of being charitable. I equally consider it a personal act of fulfilling ones promises to God as an act of maintaining an individual covenant with God. I share the belief with you that tithing is not compulsory. It is not commandment either. Some people’s minds have been twisted into believing that tithing is an express way to heaven. Some uphold tithing and neglect good Christian living. Giving tithe can as well be done as an act of charity to those who need it more than already bouyant ministers. Your clarification is sure.

  • Agu Ginika R

Seriously one needs a keen knowledge or constant study of the scriptures to be able to understand the realm of things happening around him these days. This Tithing issue has really brought all of misunderstanding and problems in our modern churches now in the sense that the men of God persuade or rather compel the congregation to go into tithing as that would guarantee their eternity and if they don’t, they should just bear in mind that they have already gotten a position in hell, they see it as an obligation that Christians should perform. But it shouldn’t be that way , giving or tithing is something done out of freewill and there are blessings attached to it . One can just decide to give either to support the work of God or the ministers of God not that it should be compulsory. Some even prefer to use the money or anything in place of the tithe To Help out the poor instead of giving it to the men of God as tithes and yet they would be termed ignorant or engaging in the wrong thing just because they did not bring it to the church . Tithe is something good and important but should out of freewill, ie a thing of the mind.

  • Joana ushie

Honestly ma I don’t think personally tithing is wrong but some pastors uses it as a medium to extort money from their members which is very wrong. Pastors should follow the true context of tithings

  • Ogidi gift uzoma

Just like you said in your post, every form of giving by a Christian should be done without fear and compulsion. This is very true ma,because they love God but because of the fear the pastor has put in them.
    Extraordinary piece ma.
    May God bless you abundantly

  • Edet Elijah

Tithing is one thing that should be between you and God……… The pastors have to adhere to the fact that tithing isn’t meant to fill up their bellies and bank account. Another is that members of congregations should try as much as possible not to be brainwashed by doctrines made by men but study the Bible thoroughly to source out the truth about tithe. Touched by the piece ma’am.

  • Onu Victor Tochukwu

Tithing is an issue that many Christians struggle with. In many churches tithing is over-emphasized. At the same time, many Christians refuse to submit to the Biblical exhortation in regards to making offerings to the Lord.
Tithing or giving is intended to be a joy, or a blessing.
We know we are not saved by “works” and gifts such as “tithing” but the heart we use in giving

  • Ezeh onyekachukwu c

I think giving to God should be done without fear or Favour. Giving should be as a result of freewill.

  • Euniprecious

Titting should not be compulsory, it should be from the heart between you and your God. Titting is a way to appreciate God for all he ve done for you although for me is not a most to you must pay your titte in the church but you can as well pay your tite else where you can help the poor, the motherless baby homes etc not necessarily it must be in the ministry but some pastor is now using church as business where every monetry aspect is compulsory and if you bring bountifully before God will bless you. Tite should be from the not mandatory. Thank you MA.

  • Unwana Ekere

This is a controversial issue in our contemporary world, i must say that you really enlighten and taught us more about tithing. Paying Tithe is a personal issue which must be done within you and your soul but some people are hypocrites about this, some churches have turned tithe to offering which is very bad.
I pray God open our eyes and heart to see more on this issue and his sufficient grace for tithe payers..

  • Akuma Victor

I would have loved to makeup a lengthy comment but no, that would be rather discordant.
Am sorry to say this, just like in your last lines ma’am, a story is told of a famous and renowned Pastor who when addressing his league of pastors ordered thus, …as you preach in your churches next Sunday, do well to tell your brethren that they must pay their tithe or denied the kingdom of God and I was like,WHAT! Who taught u that? where exactly is such statement in the Bible. it is really disheartening and unfair to mislead God’s brethren in that manner. I am certainly not against tithing either but the rate at which things are going now, it’s more like our lives depend on it. It is understandable that the Church needs it for maintenance and to take care of ministers welfare but then it shouldn’t be rated overboard to the extent of attributing it to our heavenly race. Some other ministers even go to the extent of putting down names of highest tithers and as the month draws to close, they are called and reminded of their Christian duty, Christian duty indeed. Come on! this has to stop. note, not the tithe but in the way it is preached.

  • Otti Augusta Uzoma

You can’t give out of nothing,at least literally . Christians should be able to tithe out of their free will according to their abundance. We should also bear in mind that the house of God and its servants needs to be taken care of, knowing this we will be able to tithe wisely and happily. Tnks ma for sharing your thoughts on this issue.

  • Annabelle Orji

It’s good that this topic is being discussed here because some pastors unintentionally chase their members away because of such; sometimes they even discriminate in church because of special seeds and offering, and that’s not right. I believe that tithing and special offering are to be done of free will and of a happy heart. Thank you me for this post.

  • UGWUOKE BLESSING NNEDINSO

Tithe is a matter of choice. A personal choice between someone and God. It is not mandatory. Though tithe helps the church in meeting it’s needs, it should not be forced on people. It is better to give with your heart than to be compelled to do so.

  • Queen

Tithing is not compulsory for Christians. No type of giving is compulsory, it should be given willingly. However, pastors should not limit a concept to a scripture, they should look into other scriptures unlike Malachi which you did and has broaden our understanding. Thank you.

  • Ayigbo Chineme Edna

From the above explanations and bible verses to back up you argument ma, it is so obvious that tithing is not compulsory for Christians. Rather, its a voluntary action. Just like you stated earlier, the mistake most of us make especially those we look up to, is that they use the old testament sometimes to address issues that doesn’t fall into the context. Thank You ma for this article because it will go a long way in changing the mindset of people that has long been wrong.

  • Nnorom Wisdom

Tithe was considered as given a tenth of everything one has.
It was the mosaic law that required tithes for those God.
But right now, tithe is a matter of choice it isn’t a compulsory.

  • Nnakwe uchenna

Many pastors use tithe as an opportunity to fleece the flock of the lord and use it to build mansions and cars and accumulate material things for themselves.
This ones are vipers, they use the money of their congeration to build universities that this same congregation can’t afford due to the exorbitant bills.
They would have their just recompense soon, because they know what they’re doing.
Besides, tithes should never be forced in the church neither should one be shamed for giving twenty naira if that is all he could be able to give.

  • Akaniru Chioma Theodora

Tithing is a personal thing between man and God. It’s a of showing appreciation for God’s work in our lives by paying one tenth of our general income. We also tithe by helping people and sowing of seeds but most pastors have abused that privilege and opportunity and turned tithing into a mandatory task.
Thank you ma for sharing this with us, I’ve learnt from a lot from it.

  • harmony

i wish pastors can go back and make a proper research as u did ma, and understand that tithe is not suppose to be mandatory and is not a yardstick for going to heaven or hell.

  • Ukamaka Ukaegbu Mirabel

This controversy about tithing was brought up mainly to dent the image of men of God, to me tithing is one habit I will never deviate from because it has really made much impact in my life… As a Christian it is not mandated in the Bible that we should abide by it but only those that have seen the light knows the efficacy of tithing and can boldly attest to it’s magnificent wonders.

  • Ogbodo somtochukwu ikemefuna

Hmmmmmmmmm ….I can not say I agree with u fully in dz ma. . Bt I understand and appreciate ur point of view. ..
Lemme jux say dt d teaching I hv receive from childhood abwt tithing z dt of d orthodox churches ….were we are made to see tithing as being mandatory. .
The little truth in dz z dt… Everything ,but tithing or giving are volunteery but mandatory… Wot do I mean..

Bt I understand and appreciate ur point of view ma..

  • ABONYI CHISOM. E.

Thank you very much MA for addressing this issue of tithing, many churches has made it mandatory that every body must always pay their tithes, which make some people not go to church on tithe Sunday collection because they might not have money that particular day, paying of tithes is voluntary not mandatory.

  • Ugama Gloria nkechinyere

It is actually good to pay tithe but it should not be made mandatory. It should be between one and God. Nice write up.

  • ologhofor sampson

Ma i dont see tithing as the doctrine of Jesus Christ but rather the law of old. Today, some churches see tithe as a mandatory act while some sees it as an optional act but emphasises much on it. The doctrine of Christ talked about giving and offering. I dont give tithe because i dont believe in it.

  • Nwogu Chiamaka

Whatever we are giving to God let it be done generously. From the scripture quoted in the note, tithing is not compulsory but mind you it is of utmost importance to our life, there are so many blessings attached to it.

  • Ewurum john

A nice piece ma….tithing is something done at your freewill and not adhering to pressures & coercions from different mouths. It baffles me that some churches today sees it as a “must do” act which isn’t a right theory. I’m not saying we shouldn’t appreciate God’s advocates by returning value back, as it yields a lot of favours, but what I’m saying in essence is that its necessary and not compulsory.

  • Ndieze Kelechi

FREELY WE RECEIVED AND FREELY WE GIVE.WE ARE NO LONGER UNDER THE LAW SO THE LAW IS NOT OUR SCHOOL MASTER.THE EPISTLES TAUGHT GIVING, GIVING IN THE LIGHT OF THE NATURE OF A BELIEVER.WE DON’T GIVE BECAUSE IT IS A RESPONSIBILITY WE GIVE BECAUSE WE ARE GIVERS.WE HAVE THE NATURE OF GOD WHO FIRST GAVE

  • Ezeudu Chioma

We are no longer in the era when everything was about the law. As Christains i believe we should pay our tithes regularly but that doesn’t mean if we don’t do it we won’t make heaven. Malachi 3 vs 8-11 says it all, there’s a blessing attached to it if we obey it. Different preacher’s have their own say about tithing but God’s word which is the Bible has the final say.

  • Okemiri Ifunanya Diana

No! This tithing of a thing is something I think is necessary and not compulsory but some churches have made it seem as-if if you don’t pay tith you will not enter heaven but this is something you do freely without anybody telling you how it should be done ( to whom much is given more is expected, that is if God have blessed you help others it’s also a form of tithing),but I thank God for using you to break it down for us in away that we will understand.

  • Morgan Joy

Tithing is indeed a way to obtain blessings from God but that doesn’t make it mandatory or as a means to impose on people to do it. It is something that comes from the heart. This is actually a thoughtful write up. Well done ma.

  • Eze Chinyere

I love what you said about reading the bible and meditating on it to have a better understanding of God’s word ourselves. We “give” tithe ….not “pay” tithe.. It’s unfortunate most churches today make it look like a mandate which if we do not abide by, we will be punished. We can personally develop a method of giving to God and if we choose tithing, fine. But it should not be a universal affair or some thing we are forced to do simply because we do not want to go to hell.

  • Levi ifeanyi

Exactly ma, some people think that with the amount of money they paid as tithe will make them children of God,No. This has led to situation, where some rich evildoers use tithe to cover their devilish actions.
Furthermore, even pastors of some churches out of greediness make tithe mandatory in other to satisfy their selfish interest not for God’s work.

  • Arene Ifeyinwa Ketochukwu

I agree with you ma. Every form of giving by a Christian should be done without fear or compulsion. If a Christian decides to start giving tithes he should do it in response to love and gratitude.

  • Theresa

I actually love the way you addressed this some what controversial issue by using the Bible as a basis and also using verses to pass the message…. This post actually did open my eyes becos I have always believed that tithing is compulsory and becos of that sometimes I do borrow some cash jus to have something to offer to God. I got to learn also that giving and helping d needy is also another way of giving back to God(Matt25: 35–39)
    Thanks Ma for sharing

  • Ezugwu Ogochukwu

To me tithe is not compulsory, cause I believe that when you are giving something to God you should give it with your whole heart and not to give for giving sake.

  • Essien, Anietie Archibong

Yes, the bible makes mention of 1/10 of our income and consequences of robbing God but nowadays sime pastors make caricature of this part of the gospel, getting and spending money meant for tithe and offering on themselves. As christians and true believers we should consider this. compulsory and stick to the word of God!

  • This post has shed a lot of light on this controversial issue of tithing. I personally believe that people who have an issue with tithing are those who do not have what to give in the first place so they make mountains out of molehills. There was a woman in the Bible who gave the last that she had without complaint, because she knew her God.
It all bottles down to the kind of giver you are, a cheerful giver gives cheerfully and the opposite will look for an excuse not to give, no matter how much they have.
    God bless you ma.

  • Amana Sharon Umola

Thank you for addressing this matter. it has raised serious controversy in the church. It should be a thing of a personal dealing between a man and God. You should give God thanks for blessing and not because someone is demanding money from you. You are a blessing ma.

  • Onyibalu kosisochukwu Maureen

Nice one maam..refiling.. I have really missed reading your posts since my phone spoilt but am back

  • Kalu Divine ogechi

Well said ma, this post just opened my eye to the issue of tithing, as Christians we give out of love for God so giving shouldn’t be seen as a compulsory thing especially in the area of tithes because is between you and your God so no man has the right to interfere…God bless you ma..

  • Mbata jemita

This is a nice piece indeed. As Christians paying of tithes is one of our Christian duties in showing how grateful we are to God for the help in our endeavours.

  • Well, tilting from all ‘ve gathered, is a way of showing appriciation to God, nd it’s at ur own will; meaning u ain’t pressured to do it or threatened! Nd it’s a way of helping the men of God, for instance in the old testament; God gave the law through Moses, the tithe was formally instituted to sustain the priests and Levites (who would serve in the temple) and take care of the frequent sacrifices they were to make on behalf of the people.
Even the New testament never said it’s a must! “Sow nd reap bountiful”. Its a matter of choice nd ur earnings….
If you dont ‘ve don’t go broke or becoming a begger after sacrificing to the pastor.

  • Precious

The controversy surrounding tithing like you pointed out is a contentious topic indeed.
I pray God gives me the wisdom and grace understand this topic..
And also the grace to share it..
I really need the grace of God in my life

  • Nwosu Chinwendu favour

Tithing is an issue that many Christians struggle with; they refuse to submit to the Bible exhortation in regards to making offerings to the lord
Nothing is said or implied about compulsory tithing because it can never buy you the way to heaven, it is intended to be a joy or blessing and it is done voluntarily
Thank you ma for sharing this wonderful post ,its really an eye opener.

  • Okorie Flora

Tithing has raised controversies for many Christians. It is between man and God and should be from the heart and not forced out

  • Sefiya

The principle behind tithing and giving is the fact that what we do with our money shows where our heart is. Matthew 6:21 says “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” When we are able to give 10% or more of our income instead of keeping that money for ourselves, it shows that our heart isn’t tied to our money and that we love God more than our money.

  • Charles chisom vincentia

Tithing was one of the things God told his people to do.it is not compulsory but shows appreciation.

  • Njoku Chineme Evelyn

This matter is very controversial. i have been in places where this matter has been brought up and the people end up in a quarel. Not too long ago, Pastor Adeboye had a social media call out on the famous daddy freeze concerning this tithe issue. Daddy freeze gave his own point of view why believers shouldn’t pay tithe rather, they should give the money to motherless babies , widows or orphanages instead of pastors who will enrich themselves with the tithe , send their children abroad and buy fancy cars and private jets .

  • Chioma Harmony

    Inspirational piece well done maam

  • Nwankwo gift

For sure this topic is gradually becoming controversial but one thing stands for sure the payment of tithe was not in anyway made a prerequisite to making heaven though the bible acknowledges that the payment of tithe attracts Gods unconditional blessings but this does not in anyway mean that God ties the salvation of any man to his or her ability to constantly pay his tithe. I think so many of our Gospel preachers have made so many errors when it comes to this…

  • This topic is my favourite because it has helped me teach my friends the standards for tithing.
Though a controversial topic, tithing for me entails giving to the poor and needy.
My eyes has opened that tithing does not gate you a ticket to heaven but your faith through work.
    Thanks again ma.

  • Ngwoke Peter Chinaza

Paying tithe in the church without having a good heart in helping others is as good as nothing, many people always take as if to say that their is no any other way someone cannl pay tithe apart from the church but for me I do say to them that they are committing a serious fallacy in the sence that I personally can pay my own tithe in different way which can be best known by me and my God because the Bible tells us that when you a giving, you should not allow your left hand to notice what your right hand is doing, but many of us do not acknowledge that, I can pay my tithe my given a begger in the road something. Ma thank you so much for this write up because I believe that it passes moral.

    • Edith Ohaja

But it seems you didn’t read the post. You’re reacting from the title. This is meant to educate the reader on the matter.

  • Ngbede Emmanuel

Tithing is very important and compulsory because it shows a sense of appreciation to God for what he has done, and more that is yet to come..

  • Chukwu Juliet Oluebube

I must appreciate you Ma for drawing us back to scriptures to remind we christians for those who don’t know about tithe, tithe is compulsory because it’s like a commandment given unto us. How will u rob God? In what ever God gives us I believe there should be an appreciation like the bible said one tenth of it to him that giveth

  • OGBOBI BLESSING OJONOMA

This issue of tithing is indeed a big issue in the life of Christians, most churches have this contradicting mindset about tithing but it good to give God from the little or plenty he has given to us.

  • Paying tithe for Christians is not compulsory… But that tenth we give out wholeheartedly enriches us more.

  • Idika Uloma Sophia

It good to pay tithe in the Church, but sometimes, some pastor’s makes it compulsory. Forgetting the fact that some of their members can bearly feed well. All the same I love the way u handled it here. Thank u ma.

  • Ogbodo Hope Chizoba

This paying of tithe is good but it should be optional but don’t know why some of our pastors make it compulsory. It should be according to one’s capability of his earning. Thanks.

  • Okoilu olawole ebenezer

The book of Hebrews chapter 7, from verse 1, discussed on this matter. The question of tithing being either optional or mandatory is very crucial and delicate. But for the fact that the book of Hebrews chapter 7 made reference to the story of Abraham and Melchizedek (about tithing) in order to glorify the era of Grace, tithing is a thing of personal relationship with God and not of Law. We are under grace not law.
In order to understand this more, I would suggest that Hebrews 7:1-28 should be studied.

  • Nnachetam Favour Chinecherem

Tithing is not compulsory but mature Christians pay tithe.

  • Okechukwu Obiora

For me paying tithe is not meant to be compulsory. It is between you and God no pastor or priest has no right to judge you if you pay your tithe or not. You dont expect someone who finds it very hard to feed his family to pay tithe.

  • Stephens Chinecherem Grace

I believe that tithe paying is obligatory and compulsory for me. People can have contrary opinions but it all lies in our relationship with God. We all have access to him now and he can tell you personally what to and what not to do.

  • Okibe Mercy Odinaka

Titting as a christian is not Mandatory it is based on personal decision. The bible say we should try God with our tittes and know if he cannot open the floodgate of heaven upon us, I a better understanding of the bible will help one make decision about titte paying.

  • This is really inspirational. I learnt from this post that tithing can also be a way of sowing a seed in a month as it is said monthly tithings, as you bring out from your monthly salary, and it is also a way of giving to God who provides you and protects you. Aunt Edith thanks for this inspirational post.

  • Chigbu Pamela Chinwoke

Tithing is not really compulsory but instead, it’s a way of showing our appreciation to God which involves giving from the depth of our hearts.

  • Nwanze Josephine Chidera

Tithe is given out of the bountiful we have not out of compulsion. This topic is really a topic of contention, some people believe in it while some don’t. But i believe, tithing is good for the up keep of the servants of God as stated in the Book of Exodus. It can also be given to show gratitude to God for His blessings, protection, provision as done by Jacob on his way to Haran. For victory as done by Abraham when he defeated King Cherdorlaomer and his allies when they invaded Sodom. I think we should seek God’s own mind in this matter because everybody has a different conviction of tithing.

  • Jibulu Ngozi

The controversy of tithing in today churches has always been baffling, this is the second time I’m seeing something related to this post, where a pastor pointed out that tithing is not compulsory.
Like you stated in the post, tithing is giving the tenth of what you have and it is not mandatory but optional. Thanks for sharing this post ma.

  • Obi Chukwunonso

Tithing for me i will say is something that has to do with ones spiritual life. In churches we discover that many pastors dont like teaching about tithing because of the much controversy surrounding it. But it should be paid because its not going to the pastors pocket but to the church which is Gods property.

  • I believe tithing is a choice.
BT in all sense we need to show gratitude to God,by contributing to the well being of the church.

  • Yes, tithing is compulsory for Christians.
It is baffling that even being backed up with scriptures like Gen.14:20 and Malachi 3:8-11. There is still this controversy concerning tithes in churches.

  • ojima faith

Paying tithe is something we should do as Christians not by force but it is a sign of our love to God

  • Payment of tithe is a thing of choice …churches should not force it on people. But we should also see it as an appreciation of the goodness of d lord

  • Achugwo Larissa

From my study of the NT, one major theme I’ve picked out is that we should serve the Lord by loving Him and not by a set of rules. If the intention behind giving is to please people/religious figures, we might as well keep the money/items because from the widow’s story it’s obvious that it is the intention behind giving that counts.

  • OTINGA RUTH IFUNANYA

Tithes have never been made compulsory. The Bible says that whoever sows sparingly, reap sparingly. Giving to the lord reaps bountiful blessings. I am solely against those who don’t give at all.

  • If you ask me, payment of tithes is made voluntary and I dont really see the need for it, most pastors just use it to make a quick buck. And to the pastors that condemn people who do not pay tithe all deserve a good whipping. I wonder what we’ll hear next: access to heaven can be bought?

    • Edith Ohaja

Wow, take it easy, my dear! Some of them believe it’s mandatory because that is what they were taught. It comes down to our understanding of the equivalence between the Old and New Testaments. Bless you!

  • Ezema Maryjane

Tithe is a hot topic this days, i believe that it is biblical to pay tithe, however tithing is not compulsory. No one should feel compelled to pay, And it is wrong for pastors to heap curses on members who dont pay tithe

  • Obikeguna ebele

People can sow a seed in the life of aneighbour, a stranger,or a begger, it must not be through a man of God or priests because sometimes they do use those tithes for their upkeep instead of God’s work

    • Edith Ohaja

There’s nothing wrong with being supported by what comes into the church. The Bible says that he who serves at the altar should feed from the altar. But giving to the needy is quite commendable.

  • Paying tithe is not mandatory by God to present Christians.Jesus Christ, the apostles, and the early Christians nowhere in the bible was recorded that they paid tithes.so if we claim that we are following the footstep of Christ, then Christian should not pay tithes.the overseers and pastors collecting the tithe, are also paying tithes? If yes to whom . children of is real paid their tithe to the Levite’s and likewise the levu also paid their tithe to Aaron.
If the book of 1peter 2:9 called us today a chosen race,A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD, a holy nation,Gods own people.if both of us are priest today, then who is to pay tithes to each other and who is to collect the tithes. In conclusion what the Bible advice us today Christians is to give our offering or giving to God. “Give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressing down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back”. Luke 6:38

  • chinenye ogbuagu

As much as it is biblical or because servants of old paid tithes that does not make it compulsory today,Abraham,Jacob and others gave tithes because they were grateful and from their hearts , so today religious leaders should not force their members to pay tithes, whatever we want to give GOD should be given wholeheartedly.

  • Nkwocha chibueze innocent

Tithe is a very good way of appreciating what God has done for us because is from what he gives us that we give him back

  • Michael onyedinma

Tithing is not compulsory but it is a way of showing gratitude ,ensuring substance and support to the church and ministries and also a way of deepening our relationship with God.

  • Oma

I don’t just know what to say but let the holy spirit teach us on what is right .

  • Victoria Uzor

I really enjoyed reading the topic about tithing and my view is that I absolutely believe in the power of tithing and giving back. My own experience about all the blessings I’ve had in my life is that the more I give away, the more that comes back. That is the way life works.

  • Nkpozi miracle

Thank you ma for addressing this issue but I still have a question to ask , as students who does not have source of income but depends on our parents to take care of us. Is it advisable to pay tithe from our feeding money?

  • Chikodi Obu

Tithing is not compulsory. The essence of Christianity is our relationship with God which is definitely not upheld through tithing. I honestly don’t know the plan but my advice is to play your part in following His ways. Nevertheless, it was a captivating write-up to go through. It is noteworthy that Tithing is NOT the same as giving back for there’s no amount you’d ever pay that’ll fully mean ‘giving back’ to God. You can show appreciation instead.

  • Ejiofor Emmanuel

Any Tithe that doesn’t come from one’s heart does not count. Tithing should be done willing and freely and not compelling one to so.
Also one should endeavor to show appreciation by paying tithe, it is necessary. It is not a must u should summit it to church, u can also give to those who are lacking. Givers never lack and God loves a cheerful heart and a giver.

  • Chiwetelu Stella

Most people are forced to pay tithes thus giving grudgingly because of the preachings on tithe and how they would be looked at if that don’t come out to give. I feel giving should be a voluntary act and not something done under coercion. Thank you so much ma for this eye opener.

  • Precious Amara Agu

    Preach Ma!
The outlook Christians have of tithing is to save them and their resources from being eaten by the cankerworm. Most give out of compulsion just to avoid being cursed. I believe as new creation believers we give (not necessarily limited to the 10%) out of the love in our heart not because of the treat of curses but with the full knowledge that it’s a kingdom investment. It’s kingdom work and these ‘tithes’ are necessary funds that’ll help move the ministry.

  • Ibe Arinzechukwu Christian

A nice piece ma but I don’t know why I’m finding it difficult to agree with you especially in these areas I will list below. Tithe is meant to be brought into the house of God and no other place. What we give voluntarily is more or less free will donation. Tithe was commanded by God with specifications which are 1. It is one-tenth of whatever you get. 2. It should be brought into the house of God. I think I need clarification on these points I’ve enumerated.

    • Edith Ohaja

Read the post again and you will see where it was commanded and how it pertains to our time. I have not discouraged tithing in this post but the concept that it is mandatory for Christians and we will be cursed if we don’t pay has no Biblical support. Pay attention to the explanation given about the New Testament context and search the Scriptures for yourself. Paul established more churches than other apostles and you never hear him demanding tithe from the churches. You are blessed!

  • Urama Emmanuel

Tithe is the practice of giving a tenth of one’s income or property as an offering to God. So, tithe is a type of offering we give to God. The custom of paying tithe was an ancient practice that extends into Hebrew history before the giving of the law at Mount Sinai. The first recorded instance of tithing in the Bible occurred in Genesis 14: 17-20. After returning from rescuing Lot and defeating his enemies, Abraham, met Melchizedek, the King of Salon and priest of God Most High and gave him a tithe of all the goods he had obtained in battle

    The significance of Tithe.

Tithe to God signifies that you are saying to God, these things came from you. It is also a way of worship to God for worship involves giving (offering)…..I think.it should be between u and God and not being forced by some pastors.
    God bless u ma.

The Issue here is the word “TITHING” I would rather not use that word and use “GIVING” Since Tithing is not compulsory but Giving is encouraged in the New Testament. Then as believers, it is very important to Give the Lord cheerfully. When you Tithe, you are giving, so why not use the word Giving to relieve us of the confusion. God help is in Jesus Name.
