Bible Verses on Healing

10 Bible Verses on Healing (with Commentary)

Introduction:

An important part of the Christian’s heritage in Christ is access to divine healing. Sickness and death came into the world as a result of sin but God Almighty sent His Son Jesus Christ to pay the price for our sins on the Cross of Calvary, thereby earning us redemption.

1 Peter 2:24-25
[24] “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” [25] For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

In this post, we look at some Bible verses on healing and what they mean to remind us of this heritage and enable us prayerfully appropriate our healing when sickness attacks.

Some Bible Verses on Healing

Obedience to God”s commands is necessary for healing

  • 1. Exodus 15:26
And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.

When God made a covenant with Israel through Moses, He talked about healing. God wants us to be in sound health. He, however, warned the Israelites to obey His commandments so that they wouldn’t suffer sickness as a consequence of defiance of Him as the Egyptians did. My favourite part of the verse is the end: “I am the LORD that healeth thee.” Note that it is in the present tense. God is still healing those in covenant with Him even now that the Old Covenant is past.

Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings

We should pray for our healing

  • 2. Jeremiah 17:14
Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.

The people of old called upon God in time of sickness with faith that He would heal them. So should we. Some say, “God knows everything. If He wants to heal me, He will.“ God expects us to bring our requests to Him. He knows everything and desires that we be whole but we still need to tell Him about it.

During the earthly ministry of the Lord Jesus, there were occasions when people were shouting after Him, like blind Bartimaeus did. Jesus didn’t assume his request. Rather, He asked, “What do you want me to do for you?” to which Bartimaeus replied, “Rabbi, I want to see” (Mark 10:51 – NIV). Then Jesus healed him.

We should pray for healing with God’s words

  • 3. Psalm 107:20
He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.

The primary channel through which God heals is His word. He speaks and darkness turns to light, sickness turns to health, the damaged is repaired, the lost restored. It was through the same word that God created all things (Genesis 1). We can, therefore, release the same creative power when we pray God’s word over our minds and bodies. This requires studying and meditating upon God’s word so that the Spirit of God can quicken the right scriptures in our heart to pray with and undo whatever evil is plaguing us.

God has paid the ransom for our healing and total redemption

  • 4. Job 33:24-28
[24] Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom. [25] His flesh shall be fresher than a child’s: he shall return to the days of his youth: [28] He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.

Whatever the controversy over our lives and well-being, we can rest on the assurance that the ransom for our lives has been paid. That ransom is the “the precious blood of Christ” who is our Passover lamb that is “without blemish and without spot” – (1 Peter 1:19). The debt we owe by our sins or ancestral entanglements has been so satisfactorily paid that when we are healed, we receive the freshness of a child and go on to live “to enjoy the light of life” (Job 33.28) or live life more abundantly as the Lord Jesus declared in John 10:10.

  • 5. Isaiah 53:5
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Sin brings all kinds of trouble upon us but the Lord Jesus has borne the punishment for our sins. We should tell that to any power seeking to afflict us on account of our past mistakes. Jesus has also borne whatever will steal our peace- however it has been fashioned, by whosoever and for whatever reason- Christ has already suffered it for us and His body was bruised and scourged that we might be whole. In the light of this, sickness of any kind has no authority to torment us.

The thief comes to steal, kill and destroy but I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly.

God desires our spiritual, physical and material well-being

  • 6. 3 John 1:2
Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

God wants our total well-being: in wealth, physical and mental health. I feel that closeness to God is a sign of mental health or spiritual well-being. We should not suffer unnecessarily in any respect as different aspects of our lives are interconnected. Prolonged hardship can jeopardise our physical and mental health. Mental illness can impair our physical faculties and drain us financially. Physical illness can damage our mental health and consume our wealth. Thankfully, the anointing of God is available to make us flourish all round.

Jesus healed the sick while on earth

  • 7. Acts 10:38
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

To demonstrate what the Father wants for us, during His earthly ministry, the Lord Jesus constantly used the power God had given Him to undo sickness and demonic oppression in the lives of those who followed Him. He “went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil” and promised that we shall do the same and more because He has bestowed the same anointing on us.

Mark 16:17-18
[17] And these signs shall follow them that believe; j In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; [18] They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not l hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

John 14:12
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

If we can only realise that these scriptures mean exactly what they say and exercise our authority in Christ, we shall live above the harassment of ill health.

10 Bible verses on healing with commentary

Jesus sent his disciples, including Christians today, to anoint the sick with oil and heal them

  • 8. Mark 6:7-13
[7] And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits; 12] And they went out, and preached that men should repent. [13] And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.

The disciples of Jesus were people like us. When He asked them to go out in pairs to preach the gospel, cast out devils and heal the sick, I wonder how many of them were torn by self-doubt. How many asked, “Who? Me?”

We are the living disciples of Jesus today and it is our turn to answer the call He gave over two thousand years ago. When we obey, we will be joyful and amazed at the power we will see at work, just like those early disciples were (Luke 10:17).

It is also important to note that the early disciples anointed the sick with oil for healing. So do not be shamed into foregoing the use of anointing oil by those who feel that using anything as a medium for transference of power in prayer is unbiblical or an Old Testament practice we should avoid in this age.

We should call our pastors and elders to pray for us when we face serious illness

  • 9. James 5:14-15
Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: [15] And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

We can pray for ourselves but we also need our brethren to pray for us, especially those in authority in the house of God. Some issues that we cannot handle alone or with our immediate friends and family may be tamed when corporate prayer by the church leadership is conducted. See again the practice of anointing the sick with oil, this time given as a directive. Our confidence, however, is not in the oil but in the prayer of faith that accompanies it.

Kindness to the poor attracts healing

  • 10. Psalm 41:1-3 (NLT)
[1] Oh, the joys of those who are kind to the poor!
The Lord rescues them when they are in trouble.
[2] The Lord protects them and keeps them alive.
He gives them prosperity in the land
and rescues them from their enemies.
[3] The Lord nurses them when they are sick and restores them to health.

As we look to God for healing, we should remember to do good, especially to the less privileged because this moves God to speedily come to our rescue as the verses above poignantly show. Those who are kind to the poor- “The Lord nurses them when they are sick and restores them to health.” Amen.

He sent his word, and healed them

Conclusion:

No matter how we feel, it is important to live a lifestyle of thanksgiving because God is constantly fighting for us, fending off evil- known and unknown. David’s psalm cited below is a good example of the thanksgiving we should habitually render to God.

Psalm 103:1-5
[1] Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. [2] Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: [3] Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; [4] Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; [5] Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

The Lord continually heals our sicknesses and satisfies us with good things so that our youth is renewed like the eagle’s. I myself am a witness. How about you?

Prayer:

Our heavenly Father, grant us the confidence to pray boldly for healing whenever sickness attacks us knowing that the promises in Your word are Yeah and Amen as 2 Corinthians 1:20 reminds us.
May we fill our hearts daily with Your word and give Your Spirit free rein in us so that we live above sin and exercise the authority You have given us through Christ over diseases and every circumstance of life.
This we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Mummy, good morning and happy Sunday.
Ma, thank you so much for explaining to us that God heals, and that we can partake in this healing. Also, thanks for expounding this concept with good scriptures. The concept of healing is a controversy in modern churches. So many church doctrines, tenet, philosophies, dogmas and laws have inhibited many christians from believing that true healing comes from God. Due to this arguments emanating from churches and the public inspiredProminent Gospel Singers, Don Moen and Frank Edwards, to sang a song tittled: “Changing Lives.” This is the first stanza: “Someone ask a question, do you believe in this miracles? How do you open blind eyes? How can the lame start walking? What is the source of your strength? And they replied that God is the source of our strength. God is the reason behind the healings. He is the same yesterday and today. My God is still changing lives. Thanks ma.

    • Yes, the Bible says Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. God’s power did not diminish with modernity. He is still doing miracles today. Glad to hear from you. Keep up your gentlemanly ways and remain blessed.

“I feel that closeness to God is a sign of mental health or spiritual well-being. We should not suffer unnecessarily in any respect as different aspects of our lives are interconnected”.
Quoting you with the above, I totally I agree that distance from God, causes mental illness and dwindles spiritual well-being.
I experience this anytime I forget the road that leads to church and don’t study the bible for a while.
I feel like you made this post for me this cool morning… Before we started our exams and after the exams I’ve been so distanced from Him and sincerely speaking I’ve not been alright. As I type now I was already considering not going to church but now I’ve seen clearly why I should.
I don’t have an excuse not to. I owe it all to God and I need to be healed of the mental sickness and spiritual backwardness.
Off I go for second service ?.

    You’re a blessing mummy!♥️

  • Ejiofor Emmanuel

I am also a witness and a big Amen to the prayer. May we be healed of our sicknesses, both physical and mental, in Jesus name…Amen.

It is also important to note that while we believe that our prayers will be answered, we should also strive to be sinless.

    Happy Sunday?

    • You’re right. God is not a babalawo. He wants us to live right so that His power can bless us and also to keep the devil away. Happy Sunday to you too. Have a blessed new week ahead!

  • Glory Oluchi

The blessings of healing do not fall to the lot of everyone.
There is a condition. First, you MUST believe.
All the verses quoted, were addressed to those who believed.
It is the first step to laying claim to God’s healing grace.
If you believe and have faith, your prayers can heal, and you too can be healed.
I’ve seen this in my life.
Also, thank you for reminding us that as we reach out in hope of receiving healing, we ought to live righteously to be truly deserving of that grace.

Our God is El shaddai, the Lord who can do all things, the Almighty. I have believed even before now that no sickness is too much for him and what he can not do has not existed.
The only thing limiting our healing from God’s word is faith. Ma, knowing these passages of hope is one thing and another is to believe them and expect the manifestation of His power. Thanks for these grounded words of hope and power of our Christ Jesus. I encourage the sick that will come across this to believe God and have a testimony of God’s healing.
      Thanks, ma!

  • Esther

The Father Almighty has been my Healer and my family’s Healer, even when I underwent a major surgery in my second year, He was there to do to the surgery by Himself. I still believe in His impeccable healing. Even when I hadn’t undergone the surgery and I was living in pains and tears, He was still there to comfort me.
Thank you, Jesus, for removing the burden of sickness from my life and I pledge to you that I will never be an ingrate, I must tell the world that You’re still the Healer of the old and modern Healer.

Then just as you have shown us, let us back up our faith with reaffirmations from the Scripture. Only then will our healing be complete.

For everyone who asks receives he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks the door will be opened”

I have actually never notice that the phrase “i am the Lord that healeth thee” is in present tense. till this moment. we just have to be in the right path with God and ask anything we want from him with a sincere heart.
