Loyalty wins (A short short story)

Chioma sat in the driver’s seat of her new Innoson Jeep. She had been in the same position for the past 15 minutes, fuming. Although she had inserted the key in the ignition earlier, she couldn’t bring herself to actually start the engine. She was so angry when she left the house and planned to go straight to a lawyer friend to commence divorce proceedings against her husband but she had been warned at driving school not to move a vehicle under strong emotions.

She looked around the spacious interior. This vehicle is too big for me, she thought. With that line of thought, her hands began to relax on the steering wheel which she seemed to have been holding for dear life. As she relaxed her grip, the tightness about her face also began to loosen. Suddenly it dawned on her that she wasn’t going to leave her husband.

He was stubborn, ambitious and single-minded in his present political pursuit quite alright, but he wasn’t a bad person. Just like this huge automobile he bought for her, he had an over-sized heart. All she needed was to stretch herself a little more to help him achieve some of those grandiose plans that kept him awake at night.

It was wrong of him to declare his political aspiration without consulting her, arrogant of him to presume that she would drop everything in order to support him and most insensitive of him to carelessly ask if she had handed in her resignation yet at the breakfast table, before two of his political associates. What conceit! Sounding as if he has won the election already when he hasn’t even secured the party’s ticket!

But she would stand by him, that’s what people do for those they love. Loyalty to a spouse is worth commending, she thought, even to a conceited one like hers. She would rejoice with him if he succeeded and console him if he failed. She would secure a three-month leave of absence, renewable if need be. There was so much to do, people to see, that sort of thing. She really needed to get going. With a quick glance at her reflection in the left side mirror, she turned the key in the ignition and the engine rumbled to life.

-The end-
Do you feel Chioma is moving in the right direction or she’s just a sucker?

Actually chioma is doing the right thing. Divorce is not the best option for her.Am glad she had a rethink of what she wanted to do.No matter the fault of your spouse there is need for you to support him to achieve his purpose, rejoice with him if he succeeds and console him if he fails. That’s what marriage is all about. When you said i do is both in good time and bad times.

  • mordi ifeoma

i think chioma did the right thing by sticking with her husband, e never reach divorce matter. even though her husband was wrong by not telling his wife about his plans.

  • Nwankwo Anita

Actually chioma did the right thing by going back to her husband because at times one just need to understand their spouse and support for peace to reign.and everybody have their bad sides irrespective of how good they are.so indeed understanding and loyalty wins!!!!!!!

  • Tobechi

Chioma is right in her decision. She after all took the oath at the alter, “For better for worse”. It doesn’t mean though her husband is right. But in all, Loyalty wins, which is more important than her husband’s political ambition.

“Loyalty is a virtue that is very had to find in this generation. People only want to please themselves, but this story helps to put things straight. LօվɑӀԵվ ӀҽɑժՏ Եօ ɾօվɑӀԵվ.

  • THANK GOD THAT THE THOUGHT OF NOT LEAVING HER HUSBAND WAS TRUE TO HER. STANDING BY HIM IS JUST THE ONLY THING GOOD YOU CAN EVER DO @CHIOMA. SO, DON’T LEAVE HIM.

  • Onwuka Chinaecherem Emmanuel

chioma made a right move because as a wife, the very little expected of her from the husband is “support”

  • Josiah Judith Enobong

Marriage is for better for worse; chioma in this story made a right move and decision, because its understanding that strengthens relationships…

  • ATUDUME chinwendu

According to chioma she says that her husband is stubborn, ambitious and single minded in his political pursuit, that is not a good reason to fail for a divorce, rather it’s a habit that can still be corrected. Good she had a change of mind.

  • opiri chidimma

    interesting story.

  • chinaza ezenwa

Her loyalty won indeed, am touched

  • odo chidera

it not always right to act or take decision when one is angry….
as husband and wife there should be a form of agreement between the two parties before one proceeds with his or her plans

  • Chigbo ifeanyi James

Calming down from such emotions is usually hard.I will practice this,i hope it works.

  • Ekeh Chioma Jennifer

of cus we Chioma’s always make right choices…….TOGETHER FOR EVER DESPITE ALL ODDS

  • okereke chukwuemeka matthew

it is always good to have a deep thinking about things concerning marriage because it is easy to make mistakes which can haunt one through out his life. problems concerning marriage should not always end up in divorce but seeking the face of GOD can always be a remedy.

  • Onyeabor precious chioma

    loyalty!!

  • being loyal takes you a long way. Thnx u ma for dis story, really learnt alot

  • chika divine umunnakwe

Chioma could have made a decision she would have regretted for long time in her life but thank God she calmed herself and made the right decision after her anger was over..

  • Chiwetalu Ugwu

Wonderful work ma.. I think Chioma took the right decision by supporting her husband.. People should learn to understand circumstances like this in their relationship because it prevents us from making bad decisions.

  • Ndieze Kelechi precious

I believe she did the right thing…she is a smart woman

  • Ewurum john

I believe, couples should be able to understand each other, the faults might either be from the husband or wife, but when issues like this arise, do well to oppose it as well as dwindle it
I respect the decision of chioma

  • Egwuonwu Priscilla

A very good story. Chioma did a very good job by remaining by her husband’s side regardless of his wrongs. She took a leave which meant securing her future after the elections.
    She is a commendable spouse.

  • ene esther

I feel she is moving in the right direction. Like she he hasn’t even secured the party ticket yet and he wants her to drop everything, this is the case of a typical Nigerian male, always trying to be the alpha male. I’ll commend her for not jumping to divorce him without giving it a chance.

  • nwafor chukwudalu franklin

chioma made the right choice although she was angry at what her husband was doing, she also understood that he was doing his best to pursue his goal and needed his wife to defend him. husbands and wife should work together in order for any marriage to progress, also understanding and patience.

  • nwankwo gift nneamaka

yes she is but she should air her mind to her hubby rather than sucking it all up. at times its good to let our feelings show about a particular issue or situation with this, a lot of things like conflict and misunderstanding will be avoided. she should talk to her hubby and let him see matters from her own side.

  • Obiorah Emmanuel Paschal

Wow! Very interesting and educative story. Loyalty and understanding are very necessary.

  • Akwara Agatha Uchechi

There are times in marriage when a party starts having doubts. These are one of the times one has to look at the bright side of things and compare the negative with positive. Chioma made the right decision to stand by her husband at this time. He needed all the support he could get. However, he should have told her of his plans considering the fact that she’s his wife and is entitled to help him in making decisions. Good work MA.

  • Ezeh onyekachukwu c

Marriage is for better and for worse, no matter the circumstance, you need to stick with your partner. Chioma took a wise decision by sticking to her husband.

  • Oleighibe Oluebube Tessy

yes of course, Chioma is moving in the right direction,I don’t know much about marriage, but I’m certain that lasting marriages are guided and grounded in love, patience, tolerance and for better or for worse.
therefore, loyalty do wins and pays.
kudos to Chioma for having a rethink and choosing to stand and support the husband.

  • A moment of anger can ruin years of happiness, good enough Chioma was able to control her anger. I think Chioma and her husband should reach a mutual agreement on the issue facing them. One should seek the opinion of his/her partner when making a decision and should not be selfish.

  • Willie Albert Zikiye

This is how society identifies a virtuous woman: a woman whose husband is not on the right track, yet she exercised patience, thought it Wise to stand by him and believed that there will be more favourable conditions some day. Chioma exhibited these good qualities of a pleasing wife. Indeed loyalty wins.

  • Chioma did well by sticking to her husband. Though the man wasn’t doing well. She did what she took on as an oath during marriage by sticking to her husband not minding all the odds. She is an epitome of a good wife worthy of emulation.

  • Eze Blessing Ada

Hmm this story gat me ? if I were in her shoes what would I do.
Loyalty is actually a virtue and not everyone has what it takes to stay loyal, especially when it means giving up your own entire life for the person and still try to be understanding even when you don’t understand them. It’s actually a lot of sacrifice. For me I think she did the right thing because if I were in her shoes I would do same.
Really nice story. I enjoyed it

  • Eze Blessing Sopuruchukwu

What Chioma did is what every good wife should do. Divorce is not the solution to marital problems .I believe she did the right thing.

    • Agnes

Thats a beautiful decision she made..a very mature one for that matter. That rarely happens in our contemporary day especially when she is a career woman.

  • OTINGA RUTH IFUNANYA

chioma made a right choice by having a rethink on the divorce. We should never act on our anger and frustration. Loyalty is first before anything. A strong marriage takes a gradual process. Nice piece ma’am.

  • Ezeh chimezie

How can someone declare his political aspiration without consulting his wife?? I think that’s where Chioma’s anger started. But all the same she controlled her self and made a wise decision.

  • DENNIS LYDIA EKPERECHUKWU

Chioma is actually a virtuous woman. We women should learn how to be patient, tolerant, enduring and so many other things that will help to keep our family together. The key of the happiness and success of families lies in the hands of women.

  • Nwanne Josephine Chidera

You should always support your spouse even when they are wrong. You are the answer to the person’s prayer, so should always be there to support your spouse when the need arises

  • In as much as loyalty is the key to a successful relationship ,we should also consider the feeling of each other before taking any bold step because as it is a union, we should do things together.

  • Onyejekwe favour kosisor

Chioma is a true definition of a help meet. We all have similar cases like this even with friends and family but we easily let go, forgetting that friends support and love even when there is no reason to do so. Cheers to Chioma!

  • Onyeka Stanley

Seriously it’s not easy to sacrifice something for someone. I think the bonding factor here is Love. Love is what Chioma is sticking to even in the face of disappointment and embarrassment.

  • I believe so much in Love but not when it’s one sided. Chioma is doing a great thing even in the face of disappointment but I hope the husband realizes a good woman he has before it’s too late.

  • Nwannah Juliana ngozi

Chioma has made the right decision because leaving her husband wouldn’t be the best for the both of them.she is such supprtive wife and marriage needs a patient for both parties

  • Ezugwu Leticia Chidimma

I think she made the right decision. Marriage is like a bond between a man and and woman,by making that decision she believed that marriage is for better or for worse.
Thank you ma for this. Divorce is never an option to any marital issue.

  • Nnamani chizoba

Marriage is a Union that comes with ups and downs and as a couple should learn to support each other and help them selves achieve goals together.

  • Onyekachi confidence

One of the creeds of marriage is to be together with one another till death do you part. So it is pertinent for the couple to remain with one another no matter the circumstance.

From the story, though the husband was wrong in declaring his political aspirations without her prior consent, it is good as the Lady thought twice, not letting anger sweep away her mind and loyalty to her husband.

  • Agnes

That’s very courageous of her to do. Lasting marriages are built on understanding, loyalty, love and good communication. Chioma should find a time to iron out her feelings with her husband rather than devorcing him

  • Aniebo Beauty

I think she is doing the right thing, best she actually took time to rethink about her next move that way she won’t be making any rash decision. Marriage is really a test of maturity.

  • Stephens Chinecherem Grace

I completely support Chioma’s decision, although, if I were in her shoes, it would take me a longer time to make my decision. But in the end, she wouldn’t lose out rather than if she had opted for a divorce. Who knows? Her husband might just win in the elections.

  • Joseph Chizoba Kingsley

Actually, I love the Chioma’s take in the matter. I really don’t see her as somebody who cannot resist her husband; but she decided not to divorce out of love and loyalty to her husband. It’s true, men sometime take decision without the consent of their wives, and it’s really not I place, but when this type of mistake comes in, the wife needs to pardon and not divorce. This will show the presence of love and loyalty in the marriage.

  • Amah Damian Uchechukwu

Divorce is not the best option since divorce is endless, she have to call every thing in order, because she don’t know if her next spouse will behave in a similar way

  • Ezeh Chimezie Amos

Yes I think she made a hard wise decision. It wouldn’t have been this much a fuse if her husband had informed her properly before declaring his political aspirations.

  • Ebe John Chimuanya

I love this story because the title is so appropriate and it also thought me a lot on how to behave when angry. All those attributes of a husband and his large heart won her over. I love her approach on the issue especially her three months leave plan which will determine if she will resign or not.

  • Kenneth Onah

Indeed, loyalty to a spouse is worth commending, just like Chioma, in the story, thought. Although her husband takes all those decisions without seeking her own opinion, she ought to remain loyal to him.

  • Igbokwe Rita Chinecherem

It is never good to make decisions when angry. Chioma, notwithstanding her angry mood, did not conclude on divorcing her husband. Later on it dawned on her that she has not been noticing the positive aspect of her husband, but instead she has just been seeing him from the other angle.

  • Eze Vivian Nkiruka

Chioma did not allow anger to out way the love and good sides of her husband, instead she sees it as an opportunity for her to stand by her husband despite his attitude.

  • Nnabuihe Victoria

Chioma made a very good decision by not filing a divorce. Having a woman who understands and reason is very good. And for the Man, even with family still went into political without consulting his wife what a selfish step to take.

  • Chioma Christy Agbaraka

Her husband did wrong but not to the extent of getting a divorce. Most men are like that, Ego and all. Chioma actually did well by reconsidering her initial decision. It was clearly out of anger and rage. Most times when people we love flop, try to remind yourself of their good sides too. It helps.

  • Omaga Chiagozie

Her husband is wrong by not discussing his political ambition with his wife and asking her about resignation in front of his associates but divorce is not the way out. Am happy Chioma reconsidered her decision remembering her husband good qualities. When angry we tend to make hasty decision.

  • Ogbu Gloria

Loyalty to spouse is good, she took the right decision but her husband is very wrong, why keep your better half out of what you are doing?
I pray he gets to understand

  • Ezema Uchechukwu

    Loyalty is royalty!
I’d choose loyalty any day and I support Chioma’s decision though she exercise discretion.
Her husband, on the other handz shouldn’t be so self-centred and conceited. He should try to understand his wife. I’m sure together they’ll make a formidable team.

  • Levi ifeanyi

Chioma’s decision is good. With her decision and prayer, a lot of things will change. Divorce is not an option in this situation.

  • Ejiofor Emmanuel

It is nice that she didn’t let her anger overshadow her. She didn’t fail to remember the “good” side of her husband while in anger. She is a good example to all.
