Fancying My Fabulous Fifties (Poem)

Fancying My Fabulous Fifties

It's my time to shine, to rep my King and touch the world. #quote Click To Tweet

I used to think a person’s “fabulous fifties” was just a fancy term
A known expression-turned euphemism to escape unpleasant reality
I thought it ridiculous that middle age could be seen as such
I sneered at what I called the vanity that dreamt this up

I was never bothered about age, hardly took it to heart
I was busy fighting my battles, keeping the demons at bay
But the years flew past and here I am by the mercy of God
Can’t believe I’ve been around for half a century plus plus

I may have changed but it’s in a lovely way, I would say
I got a fuller figure, a wider smile, a softer approach to folks
I’m loving the Lord, trying to make what difference I can
And by His grace, I’m learning and growing as I do His will

So yes, there’s such a thing as a person’s fabulous fifties
It’s my time to shine, to rep my King and touch the world
The devil didn’t think I’d be here still, looking oh so good
But the Lord had plans and He always has the last say

All glory to Jehovah as I celebrate my birthday today
He’s been my Ebenezer, my ever-present help in trouble
He’s making my light to shine brighter with each new day
And He’s got me fancying my fabulous fifties no end

The enemy fought but God had plans for me and He always has the last say. #quote Click To Tweet

  10. Happy Birthday, Edith! I have to say Yes to your poem! A softer approach to people–for sure … I guess (for me, anyway) it took that long (and there’s more chipping away to go) to soften my rough edges! Praying you have a blessed year!

    • Oh Dianne, I’m so honoured by your visit, and yes, the Lord continues His work in us to the glory of His holy name. I pray for God’s overflowing grace on your ministry and other endeavours in Jesus’ name.

  11. I hear people wishing others to age gracefully. But in the lane of fifties, it’s difficult to find ageing in you. This is not because you implied it in your expression but you picture says so better. Your black eyelids are still as deep black and well trimmed as those of the teenage. Your lips still full and still retaining a single stripe that symbolise happiness; your cheeks set in slight puffs that indicate balls of laughter hidden beneath. And, lack of wrinkles and your deep black hairs prove that you are wonderfully and fearfully made. I want to believe that if queens are chosen or made by these impressions, you would lead the pack! I won’t be surprised if at sixty or more your beauty did not wane!
Meanwhile enjoy your good gifts from God. Happy birthday!!

    • Awwww, this is so beautifully phrased. Thank you, Franklin. But the hair is a wig oh, Lol! May God’s blessings abound upon you and your family in Jesus’ name.

  15. Our God who fashioned mighty mountains, arranged the tides to come and go, formed the most delicate flower- decided the world needed one of you as well!! And only one- because you are unique and special. But 50?! You are not!?

    • Lol, April! I’m actually more than 50 and have been for a while, that’s why I can write about enjoying my 50s. Still laughing. You made my day! And thank you for your sweet words. You’re a wonderful friend and I thank God so much for you.

  16. I would have said I feel bad to have missed your birthday, but it will be against the spirit of the celebration to do so. Am sorry, however, to have missed it. As for my belated birthday wish, My Almighty God graciously bless you, your family, your career and shield you from the devilish eyes of the enemy. May you be marooned by His Mercy and engulfed by His Love, so that You will continue to experience classical upliftments in all spheres of your life. I therefore celebrate you and with You, in this remarkable moment of your life. Wishing you a terrific celebration and fabulous fifties.
