SAFE FLIGHT, NIGERIA! (POEM)

Intro:
I first posted this poem on Facebook in 2015, during the madness, including fisticuffs on the floor of the National Assembly, that followed the assumption of power in Nigeria by the All Progressives Congress (APC) on May 29, 2015. Since then, we’ve not had much cause for cheer. But dare we give up?

As for me, I will never cease praying for Nigeria that she may come into her own as a country that the citizens can be proud of.

[bctt tweet=”May Nigeria overcome her challenges & become a country to be proud of in Jesus’ name.” username=”edithsmusings”]

SAFE FLIGHT, NIGERIA!

Nigeria was flying through choppy weather
When APC came to power
Now she’s operating on auto pilot
While the crew brawls over the meat pot

The storm is unrelenting
The turbulence alone is jarring
But the crew’s commotion may the cabin puncture
Causing a crash from loss of air pressure

Some passengers are excusing the captain
Others say he’s acting like an intern
But I pray clearer skies and proper manning
of the deck
I pray calmness, safety, no more crew members
going berserk

  • Jeremiah Chioma Juilet

simple words yet weighty matters. May God help our pilot, crew, air hostesses and this entire plane that is Nigeria

  • thelma Ideozu

I love this. Very clever to use a flight/an aeroplane to depict Nigeria.
We hope & pray for better days.

  • Nancy Emmanuel

A poem of hope, courage and perseverance. No matter what happens, no Matter how stormy the flight with APC becomes, we shall never crash, for God is our strength, even in our darkest times.

amen..we hope things get better. nice one indeed

  • This is the condition of Nigeria. change! change! change! here and there yet the conditions of every sector gets worse as each day passes. what Nigeria needs is a deliverance section to free her from the demon of corruption.

  • Ene Kosisochukwu Zita

We need God’s intervention for Nigeria to be great even in the midst of abundance of resources. So many men in the realm of affair are evil and will stop at nothing to perpetrate evil. Until vibrant and modern minded individuals take the leadership seat, present system has nothing to offer as far as good governance is concerned.

  • Amarachi Deborah Ugwu

I really pray this tempest dont come back 2019, Apc really took us to another wing which we are still battling to come out from, but our only way of changing our pilot is through our vote, therefor in other for Nigeria to fly higher we all need to get our PVC. And changr the pilot biko. Nice job ma

  • Eze Benjamin Oduma

However jarring the turbulence could be, we have to pray for clearer skies and proper manning
of the deck, we should also join aunty and pray for calmness, safety, no more crew members
going berserk. Nigeria belongs to all of us, we cannot afford to loose it to bad and ignorant government.

  • Josiah Judith Enobong

I pray the aircraft flies & finally lands us on the land where we will know no sorrow, no lack; a fulfilled Nigeria. The rhymes I like! Keep up the good work Aunty Edith.

  • Ibe Okwukwe Emmanuella

We no longer want to fly with the APC airline, we longer want change of pilots, with different kind of retard skills in flying,we need a good ride, with a pilot that is aware that people are on board on the plane, and who will first seek our comfort and safety. Come 2019, we are saying no to the APC airline. You all should go get you PVC done.

  • Abugu Nkemjika

Yout choice of words made the problem sound little and easy to overcome.
Nigeria will scale through, 2019 will be better

  • Ezenwa Obinna G.

What an informative poem. I concur with this poem and also pray that Nigeria will not crash on the air of instability but land safely on the ground of positive change which its passengers have long waited for.

  • Ugwu Kosisochukwu Ifunanya

i pray too for clearer skies and safe landing, may Lord be our pilot.

I believe Nigeria will be a better place, i believe there is hope for the nation, i believe in the good of the land, i believe in Nigeria. Safe flight Nigeria!

  • onyema chinonyelum cynthia

“I pray clearer skies and proper manning of the deck” come 2019. God help us

  • nwafor chukwudalu franklin

that is a clear description of what we are facing currently in this country, the clear division between the first (upper) class and the rest of the passengers, the person leading us to our destination although experienced is old and the fact that the people on board are not totally at peace with one another, hopefully we would fly into clearer skies where we can progress and move this country forward.

  • Attih Faith Etim

‘Now she’s operating on auto pilot
While the crew brawls over the meat pot’
I totally love the use of words, it portrays the situation this country is in and the most surprising part of everything is that even at the grassroot level everyone wants to taste of the national cake without doing anything to leave a mark in the society. We will sure get to that level someday.

  • Ebreso Benjamin Bassey

An artistic way to explain experiences observed in the administrative realm, this poem conveys strong message shrouded by a subtle presentation, which pushes one to look deep into its contents to unravel the message it holds.

  • Maduabuchi Ebube Deborah

Nice and lovely poem……Nigeria seriously need God intervention,if only Nigeria can use one heart and embrace God,ask for his forgiveness I believe God will take charge……there is no need saying Nigeria is moving higher with riches, natural resources and all but there is no peace is nothing……I pray for peace upon Nigeria

  • ugochukwu ogwu

The problem with Nigeria is that we’ve removed God from being the main pilot to becoming the co-pilot which is not how it’s meant to be. We are supposed to go by God’s laid down rules and modernize it with ours but in this world we only listen to our voice and the voice of the devil. Lovely poem ma

  • UGWUOTA DELISE PHILOMENA

I LOVE THIS LINES IN THE POEM THAT SAYS.

    THE STORM IS UNRELENTING
TH TURBALANCEALONE IS JERRING AND ASLO,THE LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST IS CAUSING A CRASH FROM LOSS OF AIR PRESSURE.

MUM THIS IS SO BEAUTYFUL YOU ARE A LOVER OFPOLISH WORDS I MUST COMMENT,.THOSE IN POWER REALLY NEEDS TO READ THIS TO CHANGE THERE GOVERNING PATTERN TO A LIVE SUSTAINING PATTERN WITH GREAT JOY IN DUTY.

  • Ozoguejiofor Uche Jacinta

Hahahahah. Such a peom. Filled with Irony. The pilot being Buhari is an intern lol. God help Nigeria .

  • Ukamaka Ukaegbu Mirabel

Great poem of hope for Nigeria my country, I believe that our country is in the process of becoming greater than it was yesterday with all our support and efforts.

  • Ibe Chinwe Cynthia

Indeed, this is the state of Nigeria. Where the one who pledged to lead us isn’t following his word, where those who promised to assist him in moving the nation forward are moving their pockets forward. God help us! A greater tomorrow will surely come

  • Amedu Blessing Amarachi

Bless God. Nigeria will get better someday..

  • Sunday Francis C

A poem of hope for Nigeria, that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Nigeria will bounce back from this present state. God bless Nigeria!

  • keswet mercy

I also pray that we have a safe landing because ever since we changed our pilot, our trip seemed to have gone the wrong way. Its never to late to re-trace our step back and hand over the pilot seat to the pilot-of-all-pilot which is Jesus if we truly want a guaranteed trip.

  • ONUOHA DIANA

this is exactly what it means to apply verisimilitude in writing. by likening Nigeria to a flight, we can safely understand the poem and learn the lessons therein. it is not our fault that the pilots are not concerned about their passengers but are arguing over the goodies. it is sad that the control panel are in the hands of people who can barely call experienced pilot but the same prayers are we making that after the turmoil in the sky, we will land safely.

  • SAMUEL GODSGIFT AKACHUKWU

i wish nigerians will read items like this and change. i wish we can decide to take our future with all sense of responsibility. the truth is i dont trust the current pilot handling this flight and i pray that God will give him a sense of direction. it is unfortunate that our senators rather than help are busy stuffing their pocket. we pray that we have have a safe journey at the end of the day.

  • AKWOLU CHIAMAKA

I AM REALLY TIRED AT THE ISSUES WE KEEP HAVING IN NIGERIA. IF NIGERIA IS A FLIGHT, THEN MANY ARE LOOKING FOR PARACHUTE TO FLY AWAY FROM THE PLANE. OUR POLITICIANS ARE USUALLY HAPPY EMBEZZLING MONEY AND FLYING TO DIFFERENT COUNTRIES TO ENJOY THOSE WEALTH AND LEAVE THE COUNTRY IMPROVISED. I REALLY PRAY THAT THE ENGINE OF THE PLANE DOES NOT STOP ON THE WAY, LET US REACH TO OUR DESTINATION IN PEACE.

  • EZENWA CHINENYE EVANGELINE

I PLEDGE TO NIGERIA MY COUNTRY TO BE FAITHFUL, LOYAL AND HONEST. IF OUR NATIONAL PLEDGE CAN INVOLVE VIRTUES SUCH AS LOVE AND HONESTY; THEN OUR FLIGHT WOULD HAVE BEEN BLISSFUL BUT SADLY OUR LEADERS ARE HYPOCRITES WHO ARE MORE INTERESTED IN SHARING THE POT OF SOUP OVER THE COCKPIT. THE WELFARE OF THE COUNTRY COMES LAST AND WOE BETIDE ANYONE WHO WISHES TO BRING IN A NEW REVOLUTION. MAYBE, ONE DAY OUR COUNTRY WILL HAVE A NEW BRAND OF LEADERSHIP THAT WILL LAND THE FLIGHT SAFELY.

  • udeh blessing

MAY GOD STEP INTO THE BOAT AND STILL THE STORM

  • Akogu Imelda Chidiebere

Nice poem ma. I can not wait for this country go come back to a better state than it is now. We need God and Nigerian must learn to call upon him always so that peace can be restored. I Still believe in this great nation and some day GOd will hear the prayers of his children. Amen

  • Vanessa Ezenwafor

    Safe flight Nigeria.
It is well.. Our leaders who pledged to help us are making matters worse but not to worry.
I believe that one day the storm would be over, God being for us

  • Ndudu John

God save Nigeria. Pray our nation does not crash. It’s really crazy having all these negative events in one country. Really terrible.

  • odeke chidubem camilus

Arise o! Nigeria, may this tide of change pass us. This was not what we bargained for. instead, leat the change of progress, hope and success come our way.

  • Anowi chisom

The figures of speech used in this poem is awesome. The pilots are so busy enjoying their goodies that they forget they have people on board, I jus pray that we all will land safely from the hands of this selfish and greedy pilots. Nigeria, I cant wait for she to be a conducive place again.

  • Nice poem. Since APC took over power, all l do is to pray for Nigeria. I pray God to save us from our selfish politicians

  • Orji Chidubem Blessing

what a lovely poem, Nigeria is a state of confusion, at first this is not what we bargained for. But what else can we do if not to take it to the lord in prayers

  • Dike Gerald Osinachi

Though the country boils; it seems to be the end; everyone in complaints; richer hands turn irresponsible, there is still great hope. Joined in prayer for our land, God will hear us. Lets turn our complaints into prayers and all shall be better. The height of the problem shall give a surprising solution.

  • Onwusonye promise

This journey of our land shall not devour it. The cloud shall clear again. This is our prayer o God. That we may be well again.

  • Agwu Tochukwu Frank

It is high time we got to understand that the “change” per CE, is tricking way of securing the position. We voted in a position occupant in 2015, let’s vote wisely this time around to avoid voting another ambassador of poverty.

  • Ugwu Chiamaka Peace

This short piece is just wonderful. A lot said in very few lines. As much as Nigeria is in the hands of God,Nigeria is also in our hands. And as we do our lot in the upcoming election ,let us pray for safe flight.

  • Akuma Victor

“I pray calmness, safety, no more crew members
    going berserk”
I join my prayers with your’s ma’am. It is truly a bad situation. Nonchalant leadership is the bone in our throat in this country. if only words can penetrate their rigid hearts

  • Ugwuda Mathew Ejike

Wow!this poem is inspirational. This really deep and real and we are going through lots of crises that seems to last for years but what doesn’t affect you makes you stronger as this our country is in huge mess what need to do is get our voters card ready for upcoming election and vote wisely for the betterment of our country.

  • Ugwuda Mathew Ejike

Wow!This is inspirational poem. This is really deep and real and we are going through lots of crises that seems to last for years but what doesn’t affect you makes you stronger as this our country is in huge mess what we need to do is get our voters card ready for upcoming election and vote wisely to the right person for betterment of our country

  • Gerald

    Sweet, witty word usage, ma.
This poem says Alot in a condensed language.
We should all strap our seat belts, engage in productive endeavours to see to the safe landing of this flight!

  • Ezeh Blessing

Indeed no more crew members going berserk. Love that line. It portrays the way our so called senators and house of rep members fight almost every time even to the extent of coming to blows. Nigeria needs a safe flight to peace and progress with able pilots to fly her safely to the ‘promised land’. Let’s hope there won’t be a storm that may stop her from taking off. It’s really a wonderful poem

  • ABONYI CHISOM. E.

I pray that God will help our country Nigeria to overcome this hard time we are facing now, we need peace, love and unity in our country and we can only achieve that by helping ourselves, stop fighting and discrimination. We all have to join hands together and make Nigeria a better place.
    God bless you ma.

  • Ayigbo Chineme Edna

Truly Nigeria is in a state of turbulence. But I join you and other concerned Nigerians to pray for our country, that she will be calm and that serenity and orderliness will be restored to her.

  • Ezeorah Cynthia Somtochukwu

No matter the pilot driving a plane, the storm will always be there. it is now left for the pilot, no matter who, to drive his/her crew how he deems fit to their destination, not minding the kind of comments or opinions you might end up getting from the crew after all your efforts.

  • nwabuike onyinyechi

I pray that God will see us through the crisis we are facing right, make us united and let peace keep reigning in our country. Nice write up ma.

  • iheanyi ugochi elizabeth

we know that the past pilot was better than the present one , the only thing we have to do is to pray for him to land us safely so that we wont crash in this flight and hope for a better tomorrow.

  • Arene Ifeyinwa Ketochukwu

A creative poem. I love your choice of words. I pray that Nigeria will be developed soon.

  • Okemiri Ifunanya Diana

This poem Sha ,you have said it all so all we are asking God to do for us now is to help us unite so that we can correct ourselves from all the evil we have done both in time of greed ,hatred, bribe, corruption ,selfishness, envy and other bad things we have involved ourselves into ,I think if all this things are removed then this song that have been in existence will come to pass( parents listen to your children, children listen your parents we are the leaders of tomorrow ) this will only work if the present leader can listen .

  • Ezugwu Ogochukwu

May God hear our cries and deliver us from the hands of our wicked leaders may he show us his mercy the way he did in the days of Moses,Daniel and others.
God bless you ma,may he continue to strengthen you.

  • Odo Collins Nnaemeka

Ever since i was born,i have never seen a government that is too trance like this present government.Anyway,we are overcoming the whole thing, but pray for their downfall in this comig election.interesting ma.

  • Ogbu Nkiruka Gloria

This government is actually not leading us to the right place which makes the thought of leaving the Nation come to the minds of many but all we can do is sit tight and pray for our lovely Nigeria, the giant of Africa.

  • EKPEMANDU DOMINICA NNEKA

Let us pray to God to come and take control of our journey, he can never lead us astray. In Nigeria you will think you are suffering much and your case is the worst but when you see people you are better than, you will be astonished. Which way Nigeria? we don’t know if we are moving forward or backwards. Lord please, show us the way. Give us that chosen leader that will work in your directions, AMEN.`

  • Orji Chidiebube Prudence

And I say Amen to your prayer MA. Yes they are continually looting our funds and resources but may they not in the cause crash the passengers in the aircraft they are piloting as politicians… God help us

  • Nwata Blessing Chinyere

    God help Nigeria!
Nigeria is in a state of turbulence. We pray it becomes turbulent free. We pray and ask for God’s intervention in our country. And may Nigeria overcome her challenges and become a country to be proud of.

  • IBEH CHIAMAKA

Oh Lord do not Make Nigeria fall, show us the way Lord. I pray that you give us good leaders that will lead and set an example as a leader should. All our leaders in the past only assume the post to loot the nations money. They forget the promises they made to us during their campaigns. God, give this nation good leaders. Yes! That is what we need in this country! They are enjoying and we the elites, who put them there are out here suffering.

  • Ugwuaneke Grace U.

Nice one ma,with an interesting choice of words and scene,I pray we land well, but for now we are still on air engraved with confusion and distress.

  • Ewurum john

Safe trip Nigeria, I hope and wish for our pilots to have positive mindset and thinking faculty that can be able to safely give us a perfect landing and indeed the best destination. Nice piece ma

  • Onovoh Adaeze J.

Thank God another election is coming up shortly. This is the time to make a real change. Wise up Nigerians. Let’s vote in the right pilot and crew members, in order for Nigeria to have a safe flight.

  • Chineme Evelyn Njoku

This Nigeria is in serious trouble oh .I hope the coming election will grant us the safe landing we need and we all know that the trouble we are in is going to continue for a long time if the president gets re-elected

  • Sefiya

When the storm is over and the skies are clearer, the safety of Nigeria is assured… We just have to wait on God for him to do his will. Very Informative and creative poem

  • Ezemobi Chika

Change indeed,is something Nigerians can’t define today, maybe our leaders would probably do that for us, I love your power of words, thumbs up, indeed we wish Nigeria a better tomorrow

  • This a scholarly exposure of what we are passing through in Nigeria. Strictly asserting, we now see our self’s from frypan to fire . thumbs up madam for the good poem

  • Nneji Mary Chinenye

It will all come to an end soon but till then we will keep praying for Nigeria

  • Martins Kingsley

The idea of a flying country is highly personificating in nature. What l learnt from this is that Nigerians believe that they are inferior and should depend upon the superior class for their livelihood. Moreover, not been sound ethically and rationally have reduced its focus to the national cake

  • AMEN may we come into the nation we so much desire

  • EDE EMMANUEL OFORBUIKE.

well! unfortunate that since inception of the ASSUMED country called Nigeria, it have been from one perennial problem to another, from blood feast to another. Now is Fulani ANNIHILATION and EXPANSIONIST movement increasing geometrically with impunity unabated. Though i weren’t surprise knowing the circumstance that lead to its creation. I t was created by britain to perfect imperialist adventure in Africa. And what Amadu BELLO told norther elites in kaduna few days after Nigeria’s independence, and i quot: “THE NEW NATION CALLED NIGERIA SHALL BE THE ESTATE OF OUR GREAT GRAND FATHER UTOMA DANFODO, WE WILL ROOTLESSLY PREVENT CHANGE OF POWER (from north). WE WILL USE THE MINORITY IN THE NORTH AS WILLING TOOL, THE SOUTH AS CONQUERED TERRITORY AND NEVER ALLOWED THEM TO HAVE CONTROL OF THEIR FUTURE” parrot news paper October 12, 1960.end of quot. So, with this do you think Nigeria will ever be better? i don’t think so. Because thinking so, will be gross waste of intellectual endowment on the part of any right thinking fellow especially EASTERNERs, whom have been at the receiving end. Sorry! this poem just took me aback or memory lane. Thank you so much, MA.

  • EZEHA JUDITH

Could it be that we have not witnessed true change because we are looking for change in others first.Change cannot happen unless we apply a soul force.Change must begin in all of us…we must chnage our selfish ways of living and relating to others. We must rise up as a people to labor, suffer, and bring about change in Nigeria. It’s been my experience that as passionate as Nigerians discuss our state of affairs, they suddenly turn cold when there is a suggestion to take responsibility. Everyone imagines a perfect Nigeria brought by other people. May be that is why change has been elusive.

  • Nwalutum Chisom Doreen

The storm will surely be over. God has made us Nigerians and he has a purpose for it.
The only remedy for this is prayer

  • Ominaki Pamela

This poem talks about how NIGERIA has gone from bad to worse, right now we are not seeing any bright future but with God all things are possible and we believe that the storm would soon pass and we would see a new day

  • Peter Chioma Martha

This poem depicts that Nigeria was bad before the present government, but now it’s situation is worse. Those in power aren’t bothered about the condition of the citizens, and things are getting out of hand. But with our prayers and the intervention of God, things will turn around for good. As they say “there is light at the end of the tunnel”.

  • ikedichi blessing henry

The fact still remains that the crew flying the countries plane are mediocres and the passengers care less ignorant of the fact that its their future that is being truffled with

  • Ukwuani Ogechukwu Cynthia

Indeed, our country is like a plane that’s about to crash. Our safety can only be determined by God.

  • Ekwe ifeanyi Daniel

“Others say he’s acting like an intern” of course he is.Nigeria has a pilot flying things the wrong way.A pilot that has been blaming ex pilots of same problem of the plane for 3years now….we really need to get our PVCs

  • Igboamalu oluchukwu vivian

It is a clear explanation of the quote that once there is life there is hope there are still greater things to come and great achievements to be recorded God abide with us through this journey of getting to greater heights and acheiving great prospects…

  • Henry onyeka

Our country is in a great hullabaloo because of the people who are interested in the money of the country and power but nevertheless we pray that God will come to our aid

  • ikebudu juanita

this poem is interesting and metaphoric, i wish that the Nigerian government would turn for the better. All we need right now in Nigeria are selfless people who will pilot the affairs of this great nation with the aim of achieving national unity, love, peace and progress for the betterment of all.

  • OTINGA RUTH IFUNANYA

Truly APC has changed the days of good tides but very soon their would be smooth sailing. Nice poem ma’am.

  • Victor Ogbuagu C.

Am really speechless right now ma. But one thing am sure of is that one day Nigeria must surely get a good pilot that will land us in a green pasture.

  • Omeje Cynthia

All our leaders are corrupt. We need prayer to get rid of bad government.

  • Nice poem… I once had a debate back in my junior secondary school and the topic was touching and deep… “Re-branding Nigeria is a mirage “… I pray Nigeria gets better…

  • Okechukwu Obiora C

This country called Nigeria seriously needs prayers. So many corrupt leaders. We can’t trust any body or any political party again. God help us

  • All hope is not lost for our country, we would come out victorious. Thank you ma

  • Ejiofor Emmanuel

Our country needs prayers. We should pray that the pilot changes his ways and be a good one. I pray that there will be no crash. Amen.

  • Joseph joy

The poem is a pure message, I wish they are seeing this, may God bless Nigeria

  • Oshana Oyaku Endurance

We all pray for calmness and a stable state for our country, but we should know that faith without work is vain, in as much as we pray for this, all hand must be on deck to make our country whatever we pray for it to be.

  • Willie Albert Zikiye

The Bible stated boldly in Prov.29:2 ” When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” Please let’s jointly pray for the righteous people to pilot Nigeria instead of all these political vandals leading Nigeria to destruction.

  • Okalishi Oliver

Nigeria has suffered too much from the hands of corrupt political vipers. We need a change, but that change start we us. Whether or not Nigeria have a safe flight or finally crash, it depends on its citizens.

  • Chioma Christy Agbaraka

Safe flight indeed to Nigeria. I hope the cabin crew members and pilot will withstand any turbulence during the journey to avoid any crash. God help us.

  • Power of literature! Even when change has dealt with Nigeria badly. I still don’t want dx poem to end. The devices employed in d short piece are magnificent

  • Chinelobi Treasure Oluchi

Definitely God will see us through in Jesus mighty name, Amen

  • Obiemeka favour chukwugozie

The pilot is really intern but I pray we would see the Nigeria of our dreams.

  • ” I pray Calmness, Safety, no more crew members going berserk”. This is my earnest prayer for Nigeria and Nigerians. For the citizens to realize and face themselves. If we stop relying on government, there will be calm because the ship will be safe. Facebook today is turning into a powerful company. Government regulators are screaming and they keep building. To some extent to control the government. Its just a company with over two billion loyal citizens using their products.

  • Eze Blessing Ada

Nigeria is suffering from both bad leadership and greed.May God help us
    Safe flight Nigeria

  • Idika Uloma Sophia
