TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE PRESENTATION BY INSTRUCTORS

In Announcing and Performance, instructors are presenters who impart knowledge on particular subjects or skill sets on air. They could serve in educational broadcasting and skills acquisition programmes. Those who work in the latter should offer more practicals (include more activities to ensure successful inculcation of skills in the learners). It is best to have a small studio audience to help the instructor build rapport with the audience, better gauge their comprehension and speed up Q & A or demonstration sessions. However, efforts should be made to carry the home audience along. Below are some tips for effective instruction on air.

Tips to facilitate effective on-air presentation by instructors

Use a conversational tone as though you were speaking to one person (exude warmth) and use pleasantries to relax the audience.
Introduce yourself clearly, the programme, station, the topic you are teaching, duration of the episode and what the audience should expect to learn from it. (If it is not the first edition, quickly remind the audience of the last episode’s topic to establish continuity before commencing the new one. You can ask it as a question to create alertness in the audience.)
Establish some means of feedback for before, during and after each episode of the programme.
Use a point-by-point method to present your material for easy understanding. Make sure the segments, if any, are clearly delineated.
Use a multi-media format if the platform you’re presenting on permits that.
Insert a break or more for commercials, music or light entertainment like a 1-minute cartoon if you can. The number of breaks should be determined by the age of the learners and the duration of the programme. More breaks are needed for children and longer programmes. After the break, be sure to briefly reintroduce yourself, your station, the programme and topic you’re teaching before proceeding.
Review what you have taught after each segment and at the end.
Encourage audience participation by asking questions at intervals and giving the audience tasks to perform.
Give room for questions which you can respond to immediately if possible towards the end of the programme. If pressed for time, you can answer the most pertinent and send the other answers to the audience or briefly answer them before delving into the topic for the next episode.
Give an assignment based on what you have taught.
Preview the next episode. Provide a peep into the topic for the next edition to build anticipation.

Yes there should always be a platform for feedback … So people feel free to ask questions incase they don’t understand and yes give home works/ assignment to know if they really understand what they have been taught or told .. weldone ma’am

  • Lawrence Cletus

This is very handy and spot on. I will say in today’s world of the new media, social media engagement and “comments” from those who follow up the programme is key to measuring the growth and acceptance of the show or programme or whatever it may be that one is handling on air.

  • Anekwe Paschaline Chidera

Thank you for the tips Ma. I think a nice way to get feedback is to provide a platform where your audience can actually go to drop comments, ask questions and can also get detailed answers. Dropping an email account will be a nice way to do this, since it is more direct.
To ensure that your audience remain alert I suggest you ask them questions or try to speak in a way where they actually get to respond.

  • Ugwoke Jennifer Chinecherem

Thanks Ma for the tips. This write up will really help people like me a lot. God bless you.

  • Awforkansi Kamsi

Information is never complete without feedback. That is why feedback is important. Feedback can be done through social media messages or call backs.
The tips were self explanatory. ?

  • Ossai Chidimma Linda

Thank you so much Ma for these tips, I found them really helpful. Two things that could be used to fill up the break during an instructional programme, is either a music break or a recap of all the important points that have been earlier on presented.
Another way of ensuring that your audience are alert is by randomly asking a question or making a remark and seeing how they react to it.
    Happy Sunday MA.

  • These tips are really nice. With regards to the possible means by which an instructor can get feedback, i think opening a platform like that of facebook, making use of whatsapp with a link that will enable people join, an email will also be good. During or after the programme, you can open a phone line where people can call and make their contributions or ask their questions.

  • Orieji christiana Amarachi

When providing a peep into the next edition, it should be done in a captivating, enticing format, in order to create anticipation. This tip helps in gathering audience.

    • The most important thing is getting a feedback, a platform where your audience can go ahead and drop comments, ask questions, and can also get answers, this will also enlighten those that want to know more when seeing the feedback and answer from other audience.
Thank you for this Post Ma.

  • Ugwu Success

Thank u very much ma for d tips. There should always be room for feedbacks, questions and suggestions in any program and I think that’s actually what makes it more lively, comfortable and accommodating for every listener. At least it shows that their presence z been acknowledged and welcomed

Thanks a lot, Ma, for giving us the tips for effective presentation. It was self explanatory and well understood. I hope to apply this tips in my presentations both offline and online.

  • Ejiofor Emmanuel

One of the benefits of having a studio audience is that it provides soundtracks like applause, laughter or generally the audience reactions to the programme. This makes the presentation more lively and fun.

On the aspect of the means instructors can provide for feedback from the audience before, during and after the programme, I will say that social media remains a veritable tool for feedback. For instance, if the programme has a Facebook page, the programme listeners can be directed to drop their questions and feedbacks before, during and after the programme as the case may be. Some radio stations today adopt this method and it works well.

    Thank you for this article:)

  • Obiaga ifunanya

Starting a YouTube channel soon by Gods grace and with everything I’ve read to understand here it feels like I’ll be doing some announcing and performance. Is it exactly compulsory having live audience? Personally I also feel like a means of feedback could be a website,or a phone number people can reach, or even dropping comments in the comment section is an option. Having a studio is also of great benefit because it feels real this time. Thank you for your time ma, this is really educating.

  • Obi Chisom Vanessa

These are really important points I do believe these are important for public speakers and people dealing with transmission of information with mass media.
And in the case of feedback and good relations with your audience I believe new media helps well with comments and live shows.
    Thanks for this Ma.

  • Thank you so much, Ma, for this tips. I remember during my I.T when one of our coordinators asked all the I.T students to pick a topic and go to the studio that were going to have a studio presentation. We had to pick who we would interview amongst ourselves and the rest of us act as the audience and afterwards criticise. When it was my turn, I was criticised about being too serious and not being relaxed. Afterwards, I learnt how to go with the flow, carry my audience along and at the same time to be relaxed. I also feel every programme should have different feedback platforms to enable the viewers and also the audience that couldn’t get their messages or questions across get access to them through a WhatsApp text or email or even Facebook, because the bigger the feedback the more popular and successful the programme will be. Thank you once again for this piece because I definitely learnt more.

Feedbacks are very important on any aired programme,it allows for the interaction between the anchor and his audience. For example, the social media, uses the comment section as a way of feedback.
Also the introduction of the program allows for the audience to know who they are talking with and creates a comfortable atmosphere

  • Treasure moses

Thank you, ma, for sharing these tips. They’re so educative and easy to comprehend. I’m glad I read this.

  • Paschal Odigonma Victoria

These tips are very helpful and can come in handy anytime.
I’d like to answer no 1 question from the review questions you asked.

One of the benefit of having a studio audience for instructional presentation is instant feedback. Communication is a two way affair. Without the benefit of instant feedback from the studio audience, the instructor might not be able to tell if he is effectively communicating or imparting knowledge.

Secondly, the studio audience might bring up questions that will help better explain and reach other sides of the topic that may be ignored during the presentation.

Still on the feedback advantage, the instructor will be given the opportunity to observe his audience. This will enable him know when the topic becomes boring or his audience become tired.

Lastly, having a studio audience will make the presentation livelier and more interesting to listen or watch. For example; claps or cheering, from the audience, questioning and recitations.

    • Very nice! Well done! Now answer the others too.

      • Paschal Odigonma Victoria

        Thank you Ma.
        Question 2.
A possible means instructors can use to establish contact with the audience before and after the programme is through “questioning.” These questions can be directed in form of a survey. Questions like; what topics they enjoy most and what they will like to learn in the next presentation. This way the instructor can be able to position himself in a way that the audience becomes more interested, as they are being offered what they requested.

For during the programme, the instructor should created a slot for call-in. The call-in will enable the audience to share their thoughts during the programme or even ask questions. Here the instructor takes the position of the receiver. And from that point, he can understand if the audience have been following up and also find out whatever challenges they may be facing.

Another interesting way the instructor can establish feedback is by creating weekly or daily trivias (depending on how the programme runs), fun facts, problem solving questions, making guesses of the next topic, and rewarding active followers of the programme.

        • Paschal Odigonma Victoria

          Question 3.
The instructor can make use of video clips containing charts, graphical illustration, experiments, documentaries etc. that are related to the topic of the programme. The audio visual feature of this medium gives the viewers a vivid picture of what the programme is all about. This aids learning and makes comprehension easier. The audience here do not only watch to be educated, they are also entertained because it is interesting to watch.

      • Paschal Odigonma Victoria

        Question 4.
        The instructor can ensure the audience is alert by;
        – Making the class conversational
        – Asking questions amid presentation
        – Recitations of key points and worthy notes
        – Giving room for the audience to ask questions
-Drawing their attention to what has been taught previously
        – Giving room for the audience to practice what they’ve been taught.
        – Giving assignments to the audience.

  • Eze chidera jacinta

Thanks a lot man, God bless u for this

  • RICHARDS MERCY ORIGHOMISAN

Thanks alot ma for this enlighntening write-up. I’ll be throwing a bit on numbers 3 and 4.
    3. With digital presentations, instructors can more easily check in on listeners progress and offer instructional advice as well. Rather than everything riding on the live speech or presentation, multimedia presentations can be more about process, and process-driven presentation encourages meaningful feedback. Also, the use of a multi-media format to make their presentations challenges audience to think creatively, and also makes them alert. The photos, audio clips, drawings, or videos that go with them requires students to cultivate good information-literacy skills, including searching databases, evaluating resources, and creating citations..

    4. Some of the ways an instructor can ensure his auduence is alert are; talking about something that interest them, telling them why they should listen, asking questions at interval, maintaining eye contact with his or audience, having frequent break, being change concious, whether macro (changing the visual medium eg: from slides to flipchart and back again, changin the physical state of the audience eg: from sitting around a table to standing around a flipchart. changing the activity his audience is engaged in eg: from listening to discussing a problem with their neighbour) etc, or micro (making the edges between subtopics in the presentation clear eg: “So that’s the problem we’re trying to fix, let’s look now at what some of the options are.” If somebody has mentally checked out this gives them a cue to check back in again, showing a short video, using silence before and after critical statements, changing his style of delivery according to the content. For instance when making statements of fact, a measured deliberate tone should be uses while standing still and when telling a story, he/she speeds up, get chatty and move around.) in the word of Daniel Willingham “change grabs attention”

  • Joseph Chizoba Kingsley

Talking about how instructors can use a multi-media format to make their presentations more interesting, I will say that apart from the use of studio line where audience can phone in, it will be more interesting if the social media, such as facebook, whatsapp, twitter, etc. are utilized for immediate feedback.

  • Ikea Joy Chiamaka

I learnt during my brief stint in a radio station that presenters often encourage their audience to participate in their programs via their social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter and the rest. They were also encouraged to phone in during the sessions. The response was usually very impressive. It feels good to relate to this topic. Thank you ma, for this piece.

  • Chukwuma-Eke Ezinne Paschaline

Well said…A woman of substance who leaves me stunned each time she writes . I’m opportuned to know you.Sometimes to encourage participation and interest on a topic on the radio or TV…presenters tend to organize a gift giving strategy where you either get a song of your choice played for you after answering a question correctly or you get recharge card..This encourages lots of people to engage in listening and looking forward to such programs.By this you have endeared especially young minds to your program making announcing and performance reputable.

Thank you Ma for the tips. I think a nice way to get feedback is to provide a platform where your audience can actually go to drop comments or ask their own questions that’s if it’s online but in a face to face situation, engaging them in a question and answer segment most likely will do the trick.
Thank you once again ma…. God bless you
